Haydock Park Racecourse Events & Fixtures
Haydock Park opened as we know it today in 1899, although the roots of horse racing in the Newton-le-Willows area date back until at least the middle of the Nineteenth Century. Historically within the county of Lancashire, Haydock races today include both jumps and Flat events depending on the time of year.
One of two tracks in the Merseyside area of Liverpool and its environs owned by The Jockey Club alongside Aintree, it is one of the busiest racetracks in the UK. Much like Newbury races today, Haydock is home to both a Group 1 Flat race and Grade 1 National Hunt event.
Configuration of Haydock Races Today
A left-handed course with a full circuit covering about a mile-and-a-half, there is also a six-furlong straight for sprints. There are few if any undulations. Jumps races at Haydock today have some stiff fences for the horses contesting steeplechases.
Four of these come in the home straight with the second one down being an open ditch. Due to the busy schedule on the Flat, there is also an inner straight course again six furlongs in length.
Haydock races today still take place on heavy going, especially in the winter months of December, January and February. The course even gets like it earlier in the autumn sometime, so it’s not unusual for the feature Haydock Sprint Cup in September to be run on bottomless ground. Drainage has always been a bit of an issue at Haydock Park.
This venue also hosts the Betfair Chase, the first leg of the Stayers Chase Triple Crown ahead of the King George VI Chase at Kempton and Cheltenham Gold Cup. That is in November with other major National Hunt meetings in January and February. Feature races at those fixtures include the Peter Marsh Chase and official Grand National Trial.

Peter Marsh Chase Day
It isn’t long into the calendar year before major Haydock races today take place. Peter Marsh Chase day in January competes with the Clarence House Chase card at Ascot for top billing. There are four Grade 2 events at this meeting on Merseyside, though, with each acting as a Cheltenham Festival trial for big championship contests. Here are details of the big races on the Peter Marsh Chase day card:
|Peter Marsh Chase Day Races||Class of Race||Type of Race||Race Distance|
|Altcar Novices’ Chase||Grade 2||Steeplechase||2m 4f|

|Champion Hurdle Trial||Grade 2||Hurdle Race||1m 7½f|
|Peter Marsh Chase||Grade 2||Limited Handicap Chase||3m 1½f|
Haydock Grand National Trial Day
With the official Grand National Trial taking place at Haydock in mid-February, even though the big race itself is at Aintree, there’s a certain irony to that. As trials for the world’s most famous steeplechase going, this Grade 3 handicap chase has a poor record of producing winners.
That doesn’t stop the bookies shortening up horses that ran well at Haydock in the Grand National betting, though, and there are more Cheltenham trials on the supporting card. These include juvenile and staying hurdle races, plus a hunter chase. Get the lowdown on Grand National Trials day in the table below:
|Grand National Trial Day Races||Class of Race||Type of Race||Race Distance|
|Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle||Class 2||Juvenile Hurdle Race||1m 7½f|
|Rendlesham Hurdle||Grade 2||Hurdle Race||3m|
|Grand National Trial||Grade 3||Handicap Chase||3m 4½f|
|Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices’ Hurdle||Grade 2||Hurdle Race||3m|
|Walrus Open Hunters’ Chase||Class 3||Hunter Chase||2m 6f|
Temple Stakes Haydock Raceday
Moving on to the Flat, midway through May is the Temple Stakes raceday. These Haydock races today are all about sprint contests and getting horses ready to run at Royal Ascot the following month. Both the feature Temple Stakes and age restricted Sandy Lane Stakes have Group 2 status as the table below shows:
|Temple Stakes Haydock Raceday Races||Class of Race||Type of Race||Race Distance|
|Silver Bowl||Handicap||3yo Flat Handicap||1m|
|Sandy Lane Stakes||Group 2||3yo Flat Race||6f|
|Temple Stakes||Group 2||Flat Race||5f|
Haydock Sprint Cup Day
Following on from other Group 1s like the July Cup at Newmarket and Nunthorpe Stakes during the Ebor Festival at York, the Sprint Cup at Haydock takes place in early September. An established part of the pattern for thoroughbreds that are pure speed, it often throws up different results to the summer sprints. Here are all the key races from the Haydock Sprint Cup card:
|Haydock Sprint Cup Day Races||Class of Race||Type of Race||Race Distance|
|Ascendant Stakes||Listed||2yo Flat Race||1m|
|Superior Mile||Group 3||Flat Race||1m|
|Betfair Handicap||Class 2||3yo Flat Handicap||1m 6f|
|Old Borough Cup||Heritage Handicap||3yo+ Flat Handicap||1m 6f|
|Sprint Cup||Group 1||Flat Race||6f|
Betfair Chase Day
While there are plenty of other meetings on Merseyside throughout the autumn and remainder of the year, the most famous of Haydock races today over jumps is the Betfair Chase. The big race and its card usually takes place on the third Saturday in November after Cheltenham the week before and prior to the Newbury races at the Winter Carnival. All the key Betfair Chase day races are here below:
|Betfair Chase Day||Class of Race||Type of Race||Race Distance|
|Newton Novices’ Hurdle||Listed||Hurdle Race||1m 7½f|
|Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle||Grade 3||Hurdle Race||3m|
|Betfair Chase||Grade 1||Steeplechase||3m 1½f|
