Royal Ascot Tips: Horse Racing 1-2-3 Best Bets On Friday 23rd June 2023
2.30pm – Albany Stakes (Group 3) 6f ITV
This has been a good race for the Roger Varian yard with 2 wins in the last nine and they look to have another solid chance with their Exceed And Excel filly Jabaara. She won well on debut at Newmarket toward the end of May and has been given a month to get over that first experience of a racetrack.
You also feel despite the 3/4 of a length win, there was more in the locker that day. Carla’s Way was also impressive on debut at Donny and has to be considered, while Frankie’s mount Porta Fortuna has done little wrong in winning both her starts as the jockey looks for just his second win in this race (2006, Sander Camillo).
3.05pm – Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) 6f ITV
Little Big Bear clearly didn’t stay in the 2000 Guineas earlier this season over a mile, but bounced back to form with a top win in the 6f Sandy Lane Stakes. Sprinting trips (for now) look where he’s best aimed at.
He’s also already a Royal Ascot winner too, when taking the Windsor Castle Stakes last season and being the clear top-rated in the field should be hard to beat.
Sakheer ran a fair 7th in the Guineas and will be better for that. Shaqullie has won his last four, so another bold bid looks on the cards, albeit he might have to settle for a place.

3.40pm – Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) 1m 4f ITV
This has been a good race for the Hughie Morrison yard over the years with four wins to their name and they run two – Maksud and Stay Well. Both are respected but the former just edges it with Tom Marquand riding.
A recent 7th at Chester would have blown away the cobwebs after 7 months off, but he’s down 2lbs for that too and has only raced seven times. This would have been a target all season, with the step back up in trip another plus.
Godolphin’s Al Nafir is another to note coming back from a break, but ended last term well. The William Buick and Charlie Appleby combination won this in 2017 too. Stay Well can go well at a big price.
4.20pm – Coronation Stakes (Group 1) Old mile (round) ITV
This feature Group 1 has cut up a bit over the last week or so and really it’s left for this year’s Irish 1000 Guineas winner Tahiyra to pick up the pieces. That said, she was a warm fancy prior to several non-runners and was bringing the best form into the race anyway.
Tahiyra once again saw off Meditate, who tries again to turn the tables, at the Curragh last time by 1 1/2 lengths, but more of the same is expected here. Another Irish runner Sounds Of Heaven for Jessie Harrington, who had a nice winner on Wednesday at the Royal meeting, can do best of the rest.

5:00pm – Sandringham Stakes (Handicap) 1m (straight) ITV
Plenty of chances here but this has been a top race for Frankie Dettori over the years with seven wins and he’s taken to bow out with another with Coppice. Trained by the Gosdens, this 3-year-old heads here having won two of her three starts and was super-impressive the last day at Newcastle when winning by just over 3 lengths.
Coppice’s only bolt came in a Group 3 Nell Gwyn at HQ in April, yet is a better horse over a mile. Girl Racer is another of interest as she lost a shoe the last day at Haydock, but still ran well to be only 3 1/2 lengths back. Magical Sunset is worth a saver too in a race the Hannon yard often like to target – two wins since 2015.
5.35pm – King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) 1m 4f ITV
Epsom Derby runner-up King Of Steel ran a blinder that day from the front and, for a bit, looked like causing the upset until Auguste Rodin wore him down. The Varian runner was home almost 5 lengths in front of the third White Birch.
With that coming off 224 days off, King Of Steel should strip fitter for it too. They call this race the Ascot Derby and the Epsom runner-up can go one better. Re-opposing rivals Artistic Star (7th in the Derby) and Dubai Mile (9th) can follow him home.
6.10pm – Palace of Holyrood House Stakes (Handicap) 5f ITV4
The Michael Dods yard are 2-from-4 (50%) with their 3 year-olds at the track and so a chance is taken on their Tattersall. He won well at Epsom last time out and has now won 2 of his 3 runs this season. Up 7lbs here so more needed but showed a good attitude the last day to suggest there might be more to come.
Conquistador will be popular too after a good win at Lingfield last time, but is still looking for his first turf win (3 runs). Another yard that do well here with their 3 year-olds, meanwhile, is David Evans and he runs Radio Goo Goo.
