A 1000 Guineas rematch from Newmarket between Mawj and Tahiyra was supposed to be the main story going into this race. Their sustained duel on the Rowley Mile saw Classic honours go to the former with just half-a-length separating them at the finish.
Tahiyra has come out and won the Irish 1000 Guineas since, however, so the rematch was much-anticipated amongst horse racing fans attending and watching the Royal meeting. A dirty scope for Mawj just 72 hours before the race has robbed us of that.
There are six other Coronation Stakes runners turning up at Ascot though, including course winner Meditate. Although the betting suggests it’s Tahiyra’s to lose on paper, a few unexposed types may also interest punters at more attractive odds.
