2022 A Great Royal Ascot Year For The Favourites

Last year (2022) was a very good year for the market leaders with 40% of the races producing a winning favourite. We saw 14 of the 35 races have a winning jolly and at that return – no matter what the bookies say – it’s hard to see them having had a good time of things. Especially with winning favs in some of the big races like the St James’s Palace Stakes (Coroebus) and Ascot Gold Cup (Kyprios).

From 2018 and 2021 We Saw 33 More Royal Ascot Favourites Win

Prior to 2022, there were four years that saw a very steady favourites return – with the strike-rate between 23% and 27%, despite none of these four years seeing more than 9 winning market leaders.

Just Two ‘Blank’ Favourites Days At Royal Ascot Since 2018

The other interesting stat to come out of the last five years is we only saw two blank favourites days and both of these came on day 2 in 2018 and 2019 – meaning rarely a Royal Ascot day goes by without at least one big fancy landing.

Gold Cup Day The Best Day For Favourite Backers

Plus, when totting-up the winning favourites by day, it’s Gold Cup and Ladies Day on the Thursday that’s had the best record in the last five years with 13 market leaders rewarding backers.

57% Of Ascot Gold Cup Favourites Have Won Since 2002

Following on from the Thursday being the best day for favourite backers this has been helped with the fact there have been a lot of Ascot Gold Cup winning market leaders.

Last year we had another in Kyprios, while since 2002 there have been 12 winning Ascot Gold Cup favourites, including 7 in the last 10 years.

This year’s Ascot Gold Cup favourite with the best horse racing betting sites looks likely to be Coltrane, who won the Queen’s Vase at the meeting last year, and/or the 2022 St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov.

The Overall Winning Strike-Rate For Royal Ascot Favourites In The Last 5 Years Is 28%

So, the overall strike-rate for favourites at Royal Ascot since 2018 stands at a fair 28% – which means just over 1 in 4 of the races have seen a winning jolly.

Yes, the total number of races has changed slightly – up from 30 races to 35 now, but the strike-rate has remained steady and with just two Royal Ascot days in the last 25 seeing NO winning favourite we can hopefully see the bookies paying out plenty more times this year.
