NEWBURY 1.15

YACOWLEF (system – Cole yard, nursery debut)

This century, the Paul Cole yard (and now Paul & Oliver Cole) is 30 from 165 with nursery debutants and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £100.66 to a £1 level stake at SP. YACOWLEF won well in novice company on good to soft going at Goodwood last time and can continue his progression.

NEWBURY 2.25

MAX VEGA (system – seasonal preference)

MAX VEGA struggles in the summer months, recording form figures of 5027560 (0-7) in June, July or August. In the spring and autumn he’s won three of his nine starts, improving to three from six over a trip of 1m4f or shorter. The ground was too quick for him when he was only seventh over 1m3f here last time, but he’s got his preferred soft conditions today and he was second at 11-2 in this race last year. He’s about three times that price today and looks the best each-way play against hot favourite Hamish.

DONCASTER 2.30

WANDERING ROCKS (system – James Fanshawe Doncaster)

As a general rule, making the running or at least racing prominently is advantageous in horse racing. However, James Fanshawe likes his horse to be ridden patiently and his strike-rate suffers as a result. Doncaster is one of the few tracks where such tactics are advantageous and had we simply bet all his runners here since the start of the 2015 season we’d have won 49 of our 74 bets (17.9%) and made a profit of £66.10 to the usual £1 stake (prior to Friday’s racing when he had two runners). WANDERING ROCKS, his sole representative today, can add to the profits.

NEWBURY 4.15

DUAL IDENTITY (system – poorly drawn in the Cambridgeshire last time out)

High draws have dominated in the Cambridgeshire in recent years and those not drawn in the 20s and 30s have struggled. Since 2018, those who finished in the top nine in that Newmarket cavalry charge, who were drawn between stalls 1 and 19, have a six from 20 record at the next time of asking for a profit of £10.03. DUAL IDENTITY ‘won’ the race on the far side when third from stall 6 of 28 in the Cambridgeshire and could prove hard to beat here. MUJTABA qualifies on the same angle and could be worth a saver.

NEWBURY 4.50

MRS MEADER (system – Julia Feilden, amateur races at Newbury)

Trainer Julia Feilden is eight from 35 in amateur riders’ race at Newbury and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £43.83. MRS MEADER is arguably best over shorter trips than today’s 1m4f but has won two of his last three starts and has course form figures of 431 (1-3), suggesting each-way claims.
