Punchestown Gold Cup Trends to Help You Find the Winner

One of the highlight races of the Punchestown Festival each year is the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup, which is run on the second day (Wednesday) of the 5-day meeting.

This year Irish racegoers will be treated by the Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs back on the track. The Willie Mullins star chaser has won 6 of his seven starts over fences and was very impressive in beating Bravemansgame by 7-lengths last time at Cheltenham.

He takes on the Paul Nicholls horse again here as the King George winner was finally given the green light to race after some ownership financial issues. However, it’s also a race the Nicholls yard like to target – winning the prize three times since 2007 – most recently in 2021 with another of their past King George winners Clan des Obeaux.

That said, if Galopin Des Champs can confirm his form with Bravemansgame, he’ll be providing Willie Mullins with his seventh win in the race.

When Is The 2023 Punchestown Gold Cup?

📅Time/Date: 5:35pm (Wednesday 26th April 2023)
🏇Racecourse: Punchestown
💰 Purse/Winner: €177,000
📺 TV: Racing TV

You can bet on the 2023 Punchestown Gold Cup by creating accounts with the leading horse racing betting sites. There is also £1,000’s of horse racing free bets to claim along the way – meaning you can sign-up to one of the featured bookmakers and also grab some nice betting offers to use at the Punchestown Festival this week.

84% Of The Last 19 Winners Finished In The Top 4 Last Time Out

We’ve had 16 of the last 19 Punchestown Gold Cup winners finish in the top 4 last time out, so this is the first key trend to note.

Okay, most of the 6 runners will fit the bill here, but Hewick, who fell in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham doesn’t, neither does Fury Road, who took a tumble in the Aintree Grand National.

14 Of The Last 19 Winners Were Aged 8 Or Younger

The best age for a Punchestown Gold Cup winner is 8 or younger. This age range has paid out in 14 of the last 19 runnings, while 13 of the last 19 were aged 7 or 8.

The main players, Galopin Des Champs (7) and Bravemansgame (8) are both fine here, but Fury Road and the recent Ryanair Chase winner Envoi Allen fall down being aged 9.

The Irish Have Won 14 Of The Last 19

No real surprise that the Irish have won this big race 14 times in the last 19 years, while 10 of the last 14 Irish-trained favourites has also been successful. Another big plus for the Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs.

However, of the non-Irish-trained winners it’s been Paul Nicholls, who runs Bravemansgame, that has won three. With Philip Hobbs the other UK-winning yard, when taking the pot in 2010 with Planet Of Sound.

Willie Mullins is the most-winning trainer in the race’s history though with six wins, including three of the last four.

Look For Horses That Ran In The Cheltenham Gold Cup

Cheltenham Gold Cup form has also proved to be solid when looking for the winner of the Punchestown Gold Cup.

10 of the last 19 winners ran in that Cheltenham showcase race, so another big plus for Galopin Des Champs, Bravemansgame and Hewick, who all race in that event.

The John Durkin Memorial Chase is another race to look back on – run in December – as 9 of the last 23 winners contested that event. This year’s winner was a certain Galopin Des Champs!

How Have The Punchestown Gold Cup Favourites Fared?

We’ve seen 3 of the last 5 Punchestown Gold Cup favourites win and 50% of the last 10.

Irish-trained market leaders have a good record too – winning 10 of the last 14 – while four of the last 5 winning market leaders came from the powerful Willie Mullins camp.
