Why the Grand National Odds Today are So Important

The Grand National is a Premier Handicap steeplechase that dates back to the 1830s. With a total prize fund of £1,000,000, it is the most valuable race over jumps in the UK, British Isles and Europe. They call it the word’s most famous steeplechase with very good reason.

Contested over a distance of about four-and-a-quarter miles, a maximum of 34 Grand National runners and riders, down from 40, must also complete two circuits on Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool on Merseyside. There are 30 fences in all for horses and their jockeys to jump. The race attracts the interest of millions of fans around the world, many of whom will have bet on their favourites. But just why are Grand National odds so important?

When Can Punters Bet on the Grand National?

Grand National odds are introduced well in advance of the race itself. In fact, with many bookies, odds for Grand National are available 12 months beforehand. Many trainers focus on the Cheltenham Festival and Grand National, aiming to ensure that their runners are in prime condition for these major meetings at the end of the core National Hunt season in the spring. While there are no guarantees when betting on the Grand National, millions of pounds in wagers happen online, as well as on track at Aintree Racecourse itself.

Grand National Odds

All major online bookies will offer Grand National odds, with some even offering prices on next year’s race already. Many will look at the winners of other races and placed horses in the build-up to Aintree. For example, 2021 Grand National winner Minella Times put in a good performance at Leopardstown a few months before travelling over to the UK, justifying its starting price of 11/1 after an ante post betting gamble developed from around 50/1. However, despite your best efforts, there is no formula that guarantees success.

Why Grand National Odds Change

Grand National runners and odds will change in the build-up to the race. Many punters will place ante post bets. This means wagering before the official race line-up has been confirmed. Of course, this is risky, given that your selection could ultimately not travel to Aintree. This is where Non-Runner No Bet promotions come in handy, offered by many leading bookies in the UK. Other Grand National betting offers are also available.

The Grand National is one of the biggest races and one-off sporting events for betting in the UK right now. While the Grand National Festival is actually a three-day event, it is the bice race itself that takes centre stage on the third and final day of the meeting. This year, the Grand National will take place on Saturday, 13th April, at 16:00 BST. You will need to make your decisions regarding Grand National betting odds before then as regular fixed odds markets close once the horses come under starter’s orders.

Grand National Betting Odds 2024

Grand National runners and odds for 2024 will change right up until the race starts. Many punters will look for clues as to which entrant stands the best chance of winning. While it is important to do your homework, there is no strategy that guarantees success. While the bookies’ favourite will likely attract the most number of bets, this is not always the best way to go. Let’s take a closer look at how the Grand National favourites have got on over recent years.

Grand National Betting Odds 2022

Over the last 10 years, the favourite on the pre-race racecards Grand National odds has gone on to win just twice. This came in 2019, when strong 4/1 fancy Tiger Roll became the first horse sine Red Rum to win the race in consecutive years for trainer Gordon Elliott. In 2023, Corach Rambler also delivered on his status as market leader.  Of course, we have to discount 2020, when the Grand National was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, Grand National horse racing results since 2012 show other winners returned at Starting Prices of 33/1, 66/1, 25/1, 25/1, 33/1, 14/1, 10/1, 11/1 and 50/1. The mean average SP since then is just over 28/1. As such, punters would be wise to consider some of the outsiders, preferably as an each-way bet. Given the length of the course, as well as the unique spruce-covered fences that face runners and riders, the Grand National is hugely unpredictable. As such, many punters will hedge their bets and back a host of entrants, as they look to beat the bookies.

Grand National Odds for Other Betting Markets

As we have already mentioned briefly, Grand National odds are not only available on the race winner. We will now take a closer look at the markets available on horse racing betting sites to punters. Some will be familiar, while others are a little more niche. It is also worth noting that Grand National odds surrounding such markets will not be available with all bookies.

Race Winner

While being risky, the most popular Grand National bet remains wagering on the race winner. Nothing else besides which horse crosses the finishing line first will determine whether your bet wins or loses. Grand National odds on this market are introduced by bookies months in advance.

Each Way

Each-way bets give punters a bit of insurance when wagering on the Grand National. Here, winnings can be earned, even if your pick doesn’t win. Those finishing in a placed position, normally the first four or five home, will result in returns. Each-way bets are broken down into two parts. The first is a “win” bet, with the other part being for a “place” at a fraction of the outright win price, usually a quarter or a fifth.

Number of Finishers

The Grand National comes with as many as 34 different runners. However, a relatively small proportion will finish the race. Some runners and riders fall or get brought down on their way round, while others may pull up early. As such, betting on how many entrants will finish the Grand National is an increasingly popular market. On some sites, this can be a range, like 10-15 for example. In each of the last two years, 15 horses have completed the race, meaning 25 didn’t get round.

Winning Distance

Another popular option for punters is to bet on the distance in which the Grand National victor will win by. The 2021 winner Minella Times won by a distance of 6½ lengths from Balko Des Flos, while in 2022 Noble Yeats ran out a 2 1/4 lengths victor over Any Second Now. While not occurring often, a photo finish can happen as in 2012 when Neptune Collonges bested Sunnyhillboy by a nose, and 2018 with Tiger Roll prevailing by a head over Pleasant Company. Given that the current Grand National odds are so competitive, betting on the winning margin is an interesting angle for punters.

First Fence Fallers

It’s not unusual to have a faller at the first fence during the Grand National. With such a large field of horses competing at Aintree, if they take their eyes off the jump just for a second it can be race over almost before it’s begun. As such, some bookies will offer Grand National odds for there to be a faller or the number of horses to fall at this stage of the race.

Nationality of Winner

Top horse racing trainers from the UK and Ireland are also battling out to ensure that their prized assets are in tip-top shape going into the Grand National. The likes of Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Henry De Bromhead will all have multiple entrants in the race. Because of this, it may well be worth betting on an Irish trainer to win the race. Punters should also look out for a special market on who the winning trainer will be.

Grand National Latest Odds

The countdown to the 2024 Grand National has well and truly begun. It’s a big deal, after all. All reputable online bookies have already introduced their Grand National odds. The table below shows the current favourites, as well as their odds. Of course, prices will fluctuate right up until race day. However, it may well be worth backing your favourite sooner rather than later.

More on the Grand National Leading Contenders

Corach Rambler has been favourite in the Grand National odds and betting seeking a repeat win in on Merseyside after a fine third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup under usual hold-up tactics by regular jockey Derek Fox. Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell has tasted Aintree glory before after saddling One For Arthur to success in 2017.

Last season’s Irish Grand National winner I Am Maximus is another leading fancy for the powerful connections of leading owner JP McManus, the Willie Mullins yard and stable jockey Paul Townend. He keeps on winning at Fairyhouse, adding the Drinmore and Bobbyjo Chase to his CV since last Easter.

Noble Yeats and Any Second Now are both prominent in Grand National odds again

Also representing Mullins and McManus is Paddy Power Chase hero Meetingofthewaters, who ran a fine race at Cheltenham when third in the Ultima Handicap Chase. Corach Rambler used the same event en route to glory here at Aintree 12 month sago. Last year’s Grand National runner-up Vanillier is better off at the weights with the favourite, so has claims for trainer Gavin Cromwell.

Yet another Willie Mullins mount in Mr Incredible. Placed efforts in the Classic Chase at Warwick and Kim Muir around Cheltenham last season and the Midlands Grand National on reappearance put him in the frame. Mr Incredible was unlucky to have the saddle slip on Merseyside last year. Lower in the weights, but prominent in the Grand National odds are Kitty’s Light, who has won the Scottish equivalent, and Panda Boy.

Irish Horses Dominate the Market

Yet another Irish raider in Mahler Mission, second in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, looks to have been laid out for Aintree. Nine of the first dozen in the betting are trained in Ireland with the majority of the runners in the field coming over in the Emerald Isle.

Welsh Grand National winner Nassalam will appreciate testing conditions on Merseyside for Gary Moore. Minella Indo won the Gold Cup three years ago and was primed for the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham before it go abandoned, so Henry De Bromhead has a classy veteran on his hands.

Mares’ Chase heroine Limerick Lace is related to stayers and the choice of McManus’ retained rider Mark Walsh also for the Cromwell stable. The Grand National odds also have the 2022 winner Noble Yeats back for a bid at regaining his Aintree crown. Bar those names, it is 25/1 and bigger for the rest of the field at the time of writing.

What to Consider When Betting on the Grand National

Before placing any Grand National bet, it is important to weigh up a number of factors. Of course, we cannot predict the weather in Liverpool until the race gets closer. However, we can look at the stamina, weight and age of runners.

The Grand National is arguably the most demanding horse race in the world. As such, the winner will be in prime condition for this ultra long distance handicap race over fences. Every horse carries an allotted weight based on a rating made by BHA assessors using form and ability.

It is worth noting that only two horses since 2012 have carried over 11st to victory in the race. They were Many Clouds and when Tiger Roll won the Grand National for a second time. It remains to be seen if any entrants this year can shoulder such weight and score. Finally, a horse aged 12+ has won the Grand National on just one occasion since 1996, with only one seven-year-old, Noble Yeats in 2022, triumphing in modern times.

Bottom Line on Grand National Betting Odds

The demand for the best odds on Grand National is greater than ever. Bookies battle it out for the attention of punters, with the latest odds for the Grand National being available up to a year in advance on some sites. So, regardless of who you are backing in 2024, be sure to take advantage of nothing but the best odds for Grand National.

Our recommended bookies all score highly in this area. While many will turn to Paddy Power Grand National odds and William Hill Grand National odds, there are other bookies to consider. So, be sure to sign up with your favourite, claiming any welcome bonus or Grand National free bet in the process, before utilising Grand National best odds.
