Paul Townend Cheltenham Rides Day 4: Five Rides On Friday

Paul Townend was crowned the Champion Jockey of the Year last year for his sensational performance at the Cheltenham Festival. He won a staggering five races, including two seconds and three third place finish too. This year, he will be hoping to replicate that form with a stellar showing at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

On Day 4, Paul Townend has five rides on Friday 17th March. These rides include Galopin Des Champs, who is the favourite in the featured race of the day – the Gold Cup.

The two-time Gold Cup winner with Al Boum Photo also has four more rides on Day 4 along with Galopin Des Champs. He rides the favourite in the Triumph Hurdle in the shape of Lossiemouth, as well as riding the favourite in the Mares’ Chase with Allegorie De Vassy.

His other two rides on Day 4 of Cheltenham come in the form of Hunters Yarn in the County Handicap Hurdle and Embassy Gardens in the Albert bartlett Novices’ Chase. Both again have a great chance of winning their respective races.

Townend is also priced as the heavy 2/11 bookies favourite with leading bookmaker BetUK to be the 2023 Cheltenham Festival Champion Jockey.

What Horses Is Paul Townend Riding On Day 4 Of The 2023 Cheltenham Festival?

Friday 17th March 2023

LOSSIEMOUTH (Triumph Hurdle – 13.30): @ 7/4 with BetUK

Paul Townend’s first run of the day comes in the first race on Day 4 in the form of Lossiemouth in the Triumph Hurdle. The Cheltenham odds suggest that Lossiemouth has ever chance in this one as the favourite and best of Mullins’ runners in this one.

Lossiemouth has won three of his four racing starts to date and has looks increasing impressive of late. His last outing was a second place finish at Leopardstown in February, but that was only due to other horses, not him. A great chance here for Townend.

HUNTERS YARN (County Handicap Hurdle – 14.10): @ 6/1 with BetUK

Townend’s second ride comes in the County Handicap Hurdle where he saddles Hunters Yarn. He is the current second favourite with the best horse racing betting sites to triumph here, behind the Emmet Mullins trained Filey Bay.

Hunters Yarn boasts four wins from his last five starts, including wins over hurdles in his last two races. The Irish gelding won at Navan impressively in February last time out, and if he shows that form again, her will be incredibly difficult to stop here in this one.

EMBASSY GARDENS (Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle – 14.50): @ 9/1 with BetUK

The third ride on Day 4 for Paul Townend comes in the shape of Embassy Gardens in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. He is priced as a relative outsider at 9/1 odds, but has a strong chance of playing a huge part here and at least making it into the places.

He did win last time out at Thurles in January impressively off a mark of 149. He won by an emphatic 35 lengths on that day, so has a great chance at outside odds here. Faces a seven-pound rise in the weights but still an achievable mark for Embassy Gardens here.

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS (Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase – 15.30): @ 2/1 with BetUK

Paul Townend is given the ride onboard the Gold cup favourite – Galopin Des Champs. The French gelding is in incredible form and has won five of his six races of fences. His previous Cheltenham results suggest he has what it takes to win the Gold Cup this year, having won here in 2021, before falling last year in the Turners Novices’ Chase at the final hurdle when he was 12 lengths ahead.

Since then, he has bounced back with three wins in a row and has looked almost unbeatable. Has every chance here of claiming another Gold Cup victory for trainer Willie Mullins with Paul Townend in the saddle. This is by far the Irish jockey’s biggest chance on the final day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

ALLEGORIE DE VASSY (Mares’ Chase – 16.50): @ 6/4 with BetUK

Townend’s fifth and final ride on Day 4 at Cheltenham comes in the Mares’ Chase in the form of Allegorie De Vassy. This 6-year-old mare is currently the betting favourite and boasts an impressive four race winning streak coming into this one.

The French mare is two-from-two over fences in chases, and looks set to make that 3/3 here. Looks like she has it all and has the form to suggest that she’ll romp home here with relative ease for Townend and trainer Willie Mullins. Huge chance.
