Ahead of Saturday’s legendary Epsom Derby, many punters will be wondering – how many favourites win the Derby? So, we’re taking a look at recent results to see if you should be backing this year’s hot favourite Auguste Rodin.

How Many Favourites Have Won The Epsom Derby In Recent Years?

Since 2002, out of 21 editions of this race, seven horses that were sent off as favourite went on to win, which is a fair 33% strike-rate.

The most recent favourite that won the Epsom Derby was in 2022 where the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Desert Crown triumphed after going off at 5/2.

Last year’s winner was the first SP favourite to win the race since 2015. However upon his reappearance last month, he was beaten half a length by Hukum at Sandown.

Can 2022 Epsom Derby Favourite Auguste Rodin Bounce Back?

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Auguste Rodin is the favourite ahead of the English Classic on Saturday, and his trainer has a striking record in the race, winning it more times than any other handler (8 times).

However, on Auguste Rodin’s last outing he was a huge disappointment. He was last seen flopping at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas, when he was a hot 13/8 favourite.

It’s believed that Auguste Rodin will appreciate the step up in trip, with his breeding suggesting that a rise to 1m4f will be hugely welcomed. The best UK bookmakers are taking no chances and have Auguste Rodin as their Epsom Derby favourite for Saturday’s race – but in a tight betting heat the likes of Arrest, Military Order and Passenger could challenge him for the top spot in the market.
