How many British or Irish-trained horses have won the Melbourne Cup? Check out all you need to know about European horses that have been successful in the Flemington spectacle over the years.

Irish Success At Melbourne Cup Makes Vauban An Interesting Prospect

The Irish haven’t done too bad when sending their horses to the Flemington track in recent years, and 2017 saw a 1-2-3 for the nation.

Joseph O’Brien’s Rekindling powered to glory with his dad’s (Aidan O’Brien) horse Johannes Vermeer in second. Willie Mullins had the third that year with Max Dynamite complete a famous Irish 1-2-3.

Rekindling was the first Irish trained winner of the Melbourne Cup since Dermot Weld’s success with Media Puzzle in 2002. Weld was also successful in 1993 when Vintage Crop took home the prize trophy.

Meanwhile the 2018 Flemington feature saw a British-trained horse win the race for the first time ever. Charlie Appleby trained Cross Counter to victory and it was also a maiden win for Godolphin in the contest.

Joseph O’Brien equalised Weld’s amount of wins in the race (2) in 2020 when Twilight Payment got up by a 1/2 length and that was the last time an Irish horse won this one.

All British & Irish Melbourne Cup Winners

  • 2020 – Twilight Payment (Joseph O’Brien)

  • 2017 – Rekindling (Joseph O’Brien)
  • 2002 – Media Puzzle (Dermot Weld)
  • 1993 – Vintage Crop (Dermot Weld)

British & Irish Entries For Melbourne Cup 2023

This renewal of the “Race That Stops a Nation” looks to be one of Ireland’s best chances in recent times to win the Melbourne Cup. The Mullins-trained Vauban is the current favourite in the betting at 9/4.

It is easy to see why the Rich Ricci-owned five-year-old is fancied so much in the market with impressive wins on the flat at Royal Ascot and Naas over the summer.

Vauban was a star over hurdles and won the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival in 2022 – but now he looks to conquer one of the greatest flat races in the world.

Mullins also runs Absurde in the race, who was last seen winning the Ebor Handicap at York in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

  • Vauban – Willie Mullins (Ireland)
  • Absurde – Willie Mullins (Ireland)
  • Okita Soushi – Joesph O’Brien (Ireland)
