Cheltenham Festival 2024: “Sir Gino Could Be The Next Big Thing”

As we race towards the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, Ruby Walsh, who rode 59 winners at the meeting over the years, is getting super-excited about one horse that bolted up on Trials Day at Prestbury Park.

Ruby Walsh is normally all over the best of the Willie Mullins Cheltenham raiders.

However, it’s actually a Nicky Henderson horse that has caught the eye of the former Irish champion.

Sir Gino was catapulted to the head of the Triumph Hurdle market – the first race on the final day (Friday) – after winning the trial race at Cheltenham at the end of January.

And Ruby feels this exciting hurdler can get favourite backers off to the perfect start on Gold Cup Day.

Ruby Walsh told his Paddy Power blog readers what he thought about Sir Gino’s recent win at Cheltenham in the Triumph Trial.

“The way he won on Trials Day at Cheltenham, but even to look at him, he’s not your typical ex-flat juvenile hurdler.

He looks like a National Hunt horse – his size, he looks like a horse that could be a chaser down the line. Next year will be tricky for him. But I do think he’s a horse that allowed to develop could become a superstar.”

January’s Triumph Hurdle Trial had been billed a match-up between Sir Gino and the old antepost favourite for the race Burdett Road.

However, the Joe Donnelly-owned hurdler turned the contest into a one-horse race – winning by 10-lengths (watch below).

Sir Gino One Of The Cheltenham Festival Bankers

Paddy Power reacted by cutting Sir Gino into 8/11 for the Triumph Hurdle with the best UK horse racing betting sites, where he could take on the likes of Kargese, Majborough and Storm Heart – three big Willie Mullins horses.

But Walsh is still sticking with Nicky Henderson’s exciting 4 year-old, who is already many people’s idea of one of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival bankers.
