Saturday’s Betfair Chase 2023 betting sees last year’s winner Protektorat and the 2022 King George VI Chase hero Bravemansgame fighting it out for the favourites berth. But the Haydock race will also have course specialist Royale Pagaille and a Grand National winner in Corach Rambler in what’s set-up to be the best UK staying chase race of the season so far.

Betfair Chase 2023 Runners: Can Protektorat Defend His Haydock Crown?

National Hunt horse racing fans will be licking their lips this week with the prospect of a cracking renewal of Saturday’s Haydock Betfair Chase.

Yes, there are only five runners entered but these include last year’s winner Protektorat, the current King George VI Chase winner Bravemansgame, course specialist Royale Pagaille and a certain Grand National winner in Corach Rambler.

Therefore, some big names on the team sheet and if they all turn up we will be in for a top renewal and one that will give punters several pointers to races further down the line – like the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

You can see our full Betfair Chase runners guide here.

Bravemansgame:

  • Bryan Drew silksTrainer: Paul Nicholls
  • Last Race: 2nd Charlie Hall Chase (4th November 2023)
  • Age: 8
  • Haydock Course Stats: 1 run (1st 2021 Graduation Chase)
  • Odds: 4/5 with BetMGM

Paid for the turkeys in 2022 when landing the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, but has not won a race since. That said, has run some top races in defeat when runner-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and third in the Punchestown Gold Cup in Ireland. But returned last month in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby when beaten after a final-fence blunder that saw him go from the likely winner to the second behind Gentlemansgame. Another that needs to bounce back, but Nicholls loves this race – winning it six times in the past. Daryl Jacob comes in for the ride with Harry Cobden at Ascot.

Protektorat:

  • Ged Mason silksTrainer: Dan Skelton
  • Last Race: 5th Cheltenham Gold Cup (17th March 2023)
  • Age: 8
  • Haydock Course Stats: 1 run (1st, Betfair Chase 2022)
  • Odds: 15/8 with BetMGM

2022 Betfair Chase winner that is back to defend his title (watch below). Still only an 8 year-old and we know the Haydock track and soft ground suit this chaser, who is part-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson. He does, however, need to bounce back from average runs in the Cotswold Chase (4th) and Gold Cup at Cheltenham (5th). Gone well fresh in the past and will be looking to join Kauto Star and Bristol De Mai as previous back-to-back Betfair Chase winners.

Royale Pagaille:

  • Ricci silksTrainer: Venetia Williams
  • Last Race: Fell Irish Grand National (1oth April 2023)
  • Age: 9
  • Haydock Course Stats: Four runs (3 wins and a second)
  • Odds: 9/1 with BetMGM

This Rich Ricci-owned stayer was last seen taking a tumble in the Irish Grand National in April and before that was sixth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and runner-up to Bravemansgame in the King George. Royale Pagaille is also a horse that loves Haydock – winning at the Lancashire track three times from four runs. His only defeat there when second in this race in 2021. Add in the good form of the Venetia Williams yard at the moment, then any cracks in the main two in the betting and this course specialist could easily pick up the pieces.

Corach Rambler:

  • Corach Rambler silksTrainer: Lucinda Russell
  • Last Race: 5th Kelso Edinburgh Gin Chase (28th October 2023)
  • Age: 9
  • Haydock Course Stats: Never raced at the track
  • Odds 10/1 with BetMGM

2023 Grand National hero that is now in with the big boys and racing in a Grade One off level weights. We know stamina is assured with this Lucinda Russell runner but what we don’t know is if he’s up to the rise in grade and just how much that historic Aintree win took out of him. This is backed up with a poor return run at Kelso last month and even though he can be expected to have improved for it was beaten some way out that day. Off a mark of 159, is also still rated 13lbs inferior to Bravemansgame.
