Aidan O’Brien Lifts The Lid On Where Paddington Will Run Next After York Defeat

The connections of Paddington were left with marmalade on their face in the Juddmonte International Stakes, as after a busy summer the bubble finally burst for the Aidan O’Brien winning machine when beaten at odds-on in the big York Group One.

But having had almost a week to process that run, his trainer has revealed what’s next for his four-time Group One winner.

O’Brien Points Towards Champions Day at Ascot Next For Paddington

Having raced six times this season prior to the Juddmonte International Stakes, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Paddington has been a busy boy.

He’s been taking his racing well too, by mopping up four Group Ones in the shape of the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Coral-Eclipse Stakes and Sussex Stakes, so it was easy to see why connections went to the well again at York.

However, despite being sent off as the red-hot 4/6 favourite for te Juddmonte International Stakes, Paddington could only trail in third with Mostahadaf and Nashwa finishing ahead of him this time.

That defeat ended a 7-race winning streak and with connections having just under a week to access the loss, his trainer Aidan O’Brien revealed on Monday that his star Siyouni colt would have a small break but WILL be back again this season.

Next up is likely to be the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday 21st October.

The Champion Stakes is also an option, but O’Brien was leaning more towards the QEII Stakes back over a mile – saying he’s ‘a miler at heart’.

Paddington is currently yet to lose a race over a mile – racing over this trip four times.

O’Brien told the Racing Post “The plan is for Paddington to go to Ascot, The lads haven’t decided yet, but it will be either the Champion Stakes or the QEII. My guess at the moment would be the Queen Elizabeth II over a mile. He is probably a miler at heart.”

Paddington has been put in @ 3/1 with the best horse racing betting sites for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, with Nashwa and Tahiyra next best @ 5/1 and Inspiral @ 6/1.
