Look For 2-4 Past Wins Over Hurdles

With 90% of the last 20 Galway Hurdle winners having won between 2-4 times over hurdles this is a great place to start in your search for the 2023 winner.

Yes, a lot will tick this stat, but of the 19 entered there is only one that falls down and that’s the likely favourite – Zarak The Brave, who has only won the once over the sticks.

Horses Aged Between 5-7 Have The Best Record

Age is next as 16 of the last 20 winners of the Galway Hurdle have been aged between 5-7. We can knock several out here, including Zarak The Brave again, who is just 4, plus Glan, Fils D’oudairies, Mighty Tom, the two-time winner Tudor City and Cash Back.

While, with 7 of the last 20 winners aged 6, this has been the hot-spot age. This year’s 6 year-olds in the race are Amir Kabir, Da Capo Glory, Captain Conby and Merlin Giant

Look For A ‘Top Three’ Finish Last Time Out

Coming into the Galway Hurdle off the back of a good recent run is key too – with 85% of the last 20 winners recording a 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time out.

Fils D’oudairies, Zarak The Brave, Filey Bay, My Mate Mozzie, Cash Back, Mighty Tom, Bialystok, Prairie Dancer and the reserve Glan all get the thumbs up here.

We can also take this further with 8 of the last 20 winners having won last time out – good news for Fils D’oudairies, Mighty Tom, Bialystok and Glan.

60% Of The Last 20 Winners Returned 7/1 Or Shorter In The Betting

Despite the competitive nature of the Galway Hurdle it’s been a race that punters are often right in. Over the last 20 runnings the winner has come from the top 3 in the betting 11 times, with 12 of those returning 7/1 or shorter.

Favourites Have a 20% Strike-Rate In The Last 20 Runnings

Following on from the last highlighted trend, it’s no shock the Galway Hurdle favourite has a fair record – winning 20% of the last 20 runnings, with 11 of those market leaders also hitting the top 4.

This year’s likely favourite with the best horse racing betting sites is Zarak The Brave.

Trainers Willie Mullins and Tony Martin Have Won 89% Of The Last Nine Galway Hurdles

Finally, as the headline told us, the Galway Hurdle has been a prize that has been dominated by trained Willie Mullins and Tony Martin in the last 9 years. Remarkably the pair have won EIGHT of the last 9 between them – four each – with only Joseph O’Brien, who runs Prairie Dancer (3rd in 2022), breaking the run in 2017.

Both are represented again in 2023 with Tony Martin having his two-time winner Tudor City, while Willie Mullins has Zarak The Brave, Cash Back, Icare Allen and Bialystok.

Gordon Elliott Has NEVER Won The Galway Hurdle

The other interesting trainer stat is that Gordon Elliott is still to win the Galway Hurdle. His Glan (reserve this year) was 4th 12 months ago, but the County Meath man is still hoping to break his duck in this race.

He runs several this year – Glan, Amir Kabir, Party Central and Fils D’oudairies.

Galway Hurdle Trends Picks

It’s hard to ignore the top record of Willie Mullins and Tony Martin, despite a few of the other trends being negatives for some of their entries.

Martin’s sole runner Tudor City, despite being 11, has to enter the mix and even though Zarak The Brave looks the main Mullins runner, with Paul Townend riding, he does fall down on age and having only won once over hurdles.

So, maybe Bialystok for Mullins is the one to side with. Danny Mullins rides and this Ricci runner heads here having won his last two. Has only had 4 runs over hurdles (2 wins) so should have more to come and has been freshened up with 100 days off.

Of the rest, Filey Bay also ticks a lot of boxes for the Grand National-winning trainer Emmet Mullins and from his 6 hurdles runs to date is yet to finish outside the first three (2 wins).
