We Saw 18 Irish-Trained Cheltenham Festival Winners In 2022

12 months ago the Irish fired in a massive 18 winners – that means they won 64% of the 28 Cheltenham Festival races.

Ireland will again be a warm order in the How Many Irish Trained Winnersmarket and priced @ just 2/5 with bet365 to get 19 or more Cheltenham Festival winners in 2023.

The likes of Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Henry de Bromhead will again dominate most of the races. With Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls the UK-based yards trying to win back some national pride for the British punters.

However, despite this Irish dominance since 2020 – winning 58 of the 84 races over the last three years – not every Cheltenham Festival race has been kind to Ireland.

There Are Some Cheltenham Festival Races the Irish Have Dire Records In

We highlight the Cheltenham races that the Irish have struggled in over the years.

Tuesday 14th March 2023

2.50 – Ultima Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 3m 1f ITV

  • The Irish have won just 2 of the last 54 runnings (since 1967)
  • Irish-trained runners are 0-35 in the last 16 runnings

The Ultima Handicap Chase has been a graveyard race for the Irish over the years – they’ve won just two of the last 54 runnings! This run dates back to 1967 and in the last 16 renewals have had 35 horses beaten.

This year they will pin their hopes on the Gordon Elliott-trained The Goffer, who is one of the fancies, to run and stop the rot.

Wednesday 15th March 2023

4.50 – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 2m 62y ITV

  • Just 2 Irish-trained winners in the last 8 years

Okay, not a totally poor record, but still one that should be noted. Since 2015, we’ve only seen winners for Jessi Harrington (2017) and Gordon Elliott (2020). The other six winners have been UK-trained, including two for Paul Nicholls.

However, you feel with most of the runners at the head of the 2023 Grand Annual betting Irish-trained, this might change this year.

Thursday 16th March 2023

4.10 – Plate Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 2m 4f 166y ITV

  • The Irish have only sent out 4 winners since 1982

Another very poor race over the years for the Irish – just the 4 winners since 1982. Okay, these four winners have come since 2016, so maybe the tide is turning,  but it’s still an overall poor race for the Irish. This year the Grand National-winning trainer Emmet Mullins could improve things for the Irish with So Scottish.

5.30 – Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase 3m 2f RTV

  • Just 5 Irish winners in last 39 years (but have won 5 of the last 9)

With only 5 Irish winners of the Kim Muir since 1983, this is another race the Irish have not had the best of records in. However, it’s worth pointing out that these five successes all came since 2014. Therefore, a small word of caution here but it’s still an interesting Cheltenham Festival trend that the Irish seem to be chipping away at.
