Edwardstone Just Edges It with Our Main Champion Chase Trends
If the Champion Chase betting is to be believed we could be in for a crackerjack of a race. Last year’s winner Energumene and the 2022 Arkle Chase winner Edwardstone have been flip-flopping at the head of the betting for months.
The Champion Chase trends also suggest it’s a tough call and you feel this will be a hugely divided race for punters. Of course you can hand-pick your own stats too – we’ve listed all the main ones below. However, we’ve selected out top eight Champion Chase trends to take into the race and it’s EDWARDSTONE that just gets the nod.
Arkle Winners Have a Great Champion Chase Record
The first tick for Edwardstone is that last year’s Arkle Novices’ Chase winners have decent records following-up the next season in this race. 7 of the last 12 Arkle winners, in fact, have gone onto win the Champion Chase the next term. Put The Kettle On is the most recent example of this winning both races in 2020 and 2021.
Plus, a massive 18 of the last 21 Arkle Chase winners (86%) finished placed of better in the Champion Chase the next season.
Running In the Tingle Creek This Season Is Another Plus
A run in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown earlier in the year is another positive. 14 of the last 22 Champion Chase winners ticked this trend and is another that Edwardstone has in his favour. This Alan King-trained 9 year-old actually won the Tingle Creek Chase back on December 3rd. (Watch below)
Trainer Alan King Won The Champion Chase in 2007 with Voy Por Ustedes
Edwardstone’s trainer Alan King is also no stranger to winning the Champion Chase. He landed the day two feature back in 2007 with the Robert Ogden-owned Voy Por Ustedes.

Past Champions Often Run Well in The Champion Chase
The 2023 Champion Chase is also another Festival race where the current Cheltenham Festival champ is back to try and defend his title.
In recent times the defending Champion Chase winners have an okay record too. Altior won the race back-to-back in 2018 and 2019, while Master Minded did the same in 2008 and 2009.
Over the years 13 current Champion Chase winners have won the race more than once.
Last year’s win for Energumene was also the first in the Champion Chase for trainer Willie Mullins. Prior to last year it had been a race that was eluding the champion Irish handler.
In terms of out 8 key Champion Chase trends, Energumene has a strong presence of pluses too. With only not being the Arkle Chase winner and having not run in the Tingle Creek the negatives.

The Champion Chase Trends Suggest Editeur Du Gite Might Struggle
In a race that seems to revolve around the first two in the betting – some punters might look further down the market for the winner.
The Gary Moore-trained Editeur Du Gite will have his backers – after all, he beat both Edwardstone and Energumene in the Clarence House Chase. However, the main 8 trends that we’ve showcased don’t bode well for Editeur Du Gite. The only two (of the 8) that he ticks are having raced 3 or less times and coming from top 3 in the betting (but that could change too).
