Known as Champion Day, day 1 features four Grade 1 races. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Arkle Challenge Trophy, Champion Hurdle and Mares’ Hurdle are among the races to attract the interest of punters. For many, Champion Day is the most enjoyable of the entire festival. It should therefore not be a surprise that Cheltenham day 1 tips are very much in demand. Starting with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, which is seen as a breeding ground for future Cheltenham stars, Facile Vega was a strong favourite until losing his unbeaten record. He won the Champion Bumper here 12 months ago and is son of Festival royalty, in six-time Mares’ Hurdle victor Quevega. Facile Vega may still be the one they all have to beat but is opposable now, especially as his mother was at her best over further here. Willie Mullins can also call on Il Etait Temps, who pulled too hard at Cheltenham last year in the Triumph Hurdle but has learned on the job to settle better. From a smaller Irish stable, Marine Nationale, has class but is in even deeper waters here. Best of the British looks like Tolworth winner Tahmuras whose form has worked out pretty well. Verdict: Given the boosts received to his Sandown form in recent weeks with those in-behind franking the form in a Grade 2 at Kelso, Tahmuras appeals most a bit of each way value. Il Etait Temps is a big danger, while Facile Vega bouncing back would be a bad result for the bookies. Last season’s Supreme runner-up Jonbon was all the rage with bookmakers to land the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase. He has taken to fences really well for the powerful connections of owner JP McManus and trainer Nicky Henderson. A less than convincing display in a match race around Warwick the last day has raised some questions, though. Willie Mullins has a four-pronged attack against Jonbon headed by the improving El Fabiolo, who landed the Irish Arkle in style. Last year’s Supreme faller Dysart Dynamo could be a contender if settling better, while 2020 County Hurdle winner Saint Roi is another with each way claims if no worse for taking a tumble last time out. Verdict: Despite a scare at Warwick the last day, Jonbon may have learned plenty for the experience of being taken on. He beat the obvious danger in El Fabiolo over hurdles at Aintree and the top two in the market are clearly ones to focus on. The Champion Hurdle is the focus of attention for many on day 1. Coming with a prize pool of over £330,000, the Grade 1 race was won by Honeysuckle again last year. Henry De Bromhead’s wonder mare has been beaten since, however, and rerouted to the Mares’ Hurdle. That leaves Constitution Hill is well-fancied to build on his wide-margin Supreme success and bloodless victories in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and Christmas Hurdle around Kempton. Other leading Irish contenders for the Champion Hurdle are State Man and young pretender Vauban, with both winning at last year’s Festival on Gold Cup day. The former has clearly improved for Willie Mullins since cruising to victory in the County Hurdle with four Grade 1 successes. Vauban may find things tough this season, but connections will persevere because they’ve won this race before with the likes of Faugheen and Annie Power. Verdict: There’s simply no opposing Constitution Hill on all known form, but a long odds-on favourite isn’t exactly value. With State Man almost sure of second, the each way betting angle is difficult here. I Like To Move It may be best of the rest, even if his course and distance win in the Greatwood Hurdle had so many flights omitted. If there’s one race that might steal the show on the opening day, then it’s this one. Honeysuckle triumphed in this three years ago and looks set to bring the curtain down on her career at Cheltenham in it. She still sets the standard and has already bested long-time rival Epatante on multiple occasions. Outside of those big names, last year’s Mares’ Hurdle heroine Marie’s Rock is no back number and swerves the Stayers’ Hurdle for this instead. If the ground proved soft enough, then that would bring Love Envoi into calculations as Harry Fry’s charge is dynamite with cut underfoot. Willie Mullins may run Echoes In Rain in this race again and is looking for a better display from this keen going sort. He also has Brandy Love, who is a better mare going left-handed, who should come on for her reappearance behind Queens Brook from the Gordon Elliott stable and was second in this race 12 months ago. Verdict: Three-time Cheltenham Festival winner Honeysuckle still sets a clear standard and has always had the beating of long-time rival Epatante. It’d be foolish to ignore Marie’s Rock and Willie Mullins’ hand in the race, however, so the likes of Brandy Love and Shewearsitwell complete the shortlist. There’s a definite class edge for last year’s Brown Advisory and Irish Grand National third Gaillard Du Mesnil, who has plenty of experience in his second season over fences. Crack amateur jockey Patrick Mullins got his wish after canvassing father and trainer Willie to go down this route. Gordon Elliott has contenders in the shape of course winner Chemical Energy, who needs a drying day, and Minella Crooner. Yet another Irish raider in Mahler Mission never jumped a fence at Cheltenham in October but has improved since then. At bigger prices, the Mullins second string Tenzing won’t mind any rain and shapes like getting the marathon 3m 6f is within his compass. The field all has plenty to find with the ante post favourite here, though. Verdict: It’s a race entirely at the mercy of Gaillard Du Mesnil on paper. The ground may have gone against Chemical Energy, so Minella Crooner could be each way value if the favourite is too short for some punters. Tenzing has conditions that may help him hit the frame. Cheltenham Wednesday tips would be nothing without discussing the opening Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. The first race on day 2 is fascinating as Paul Nicholls trained market leader Hermes Allen takes on contenders from the Willie Mullins stable. All of Gaelic Warrior, an unlucky loser in a juvenile handicap at last year’s Festival, the unexposed Impaire Et Passe and Champ Kiely go down this route. Former jockey, now trainer and owner Barry Connell had indicated his Dublin Racing Festival 2m 6f Grade 1 winner Good Land will drop back in trip for the Ballymore, and could prove the biggest danger of all to Hermes Allen. It would be a shock if the winner didn’t come from this classier half of the 10-runner field. Verdict: This boils down to Good Land, Hermes Allen and Impaire Et Passe. Paul Nicholls’ charge is the only course and distance victory in the line-up, won the Challow at a canter, and that form has received plenty of boosts since. There are no stamina doubts about Good Land, but his supporters are betting on a jockey who cannot take weight off with his claim, so that leaves the unexposed Impaire Et Passe as a serious danger. Like Gaelic Warrior, he has to prove his stamina. Elsewhere, the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase sees unbeaten Irish raider Gerri Colombe stepping up in distance following two winter triumphs at the highest level around Limerick and Sandown. Kempton’s Kauto Star winner Thyme Hill is a leading British contender with a good Festival record. He’s yet to win at this meeting, but Philip Hobbs has always held him in high regard. If the ground gets testing, than Dan Skelton’s mare Galia De Liteaux also has claims after winning twice on heavy going at Bangor and Warwick earlier in the season. The Real Whacker has two Cheltenham wins to his name, including the Dipper on New Year’s Day, so commands respect for Patrick Neville. Verdict: With Gaillard Du Mesnil set for an even sterner test of stamina, the way is clear for Gerri Colombe to add to his Scilly Isles success now upped in trip. Thyme Hill is respected but has never actually won a race at the Festival, and may find one too good once again after placing in the Champion Bumper and Stayers’ Hurdle before. Galia De Liteaux looks an each way bet if the rain continues to hit Cheltenham. Last year’s victor Energumene remains in contention for a repeat victory despite a defeat when last in action, with the man challenge coming from the Arkle winner Edwardstone. Only 14 initial Champion Chase entries have been made, reduced to seven at final declarations, suggesting there’s isn’t much depth to the division in the British Isles this season. The improver against that pair, who go the better of both in the rearranged Clarence House Chase on Festival Trials Day, is Editeur Du Gite. He has a fine record around Cheltenham and justified connections supplementing him for a race he wouldn’t have contested if it could’ve been staged at its regular home of Ascot. Verdict: A trappy puzzle with the Clarence House being run on the New course and this race on the Old course. A sharper distance doesn’t preclude Editeur Du Gite from following-up as he’s definitely improved and taken his form to a new level with graded victories this winter. Energumene and Edwardstone now have another horse to worry about in what has gone from a match to a three-way dance for the honours. Gordon Elliott has dominated the Cross Country race since it became a conditions contest rather than a handicap, and he holds all the aces once more. Three-time winner Tiger Roll may be retired now, but his conqueror and last year’s winner Delta Work will tune up for another tilt at Grand National glory in this event again. There are no stamina doubts about stable companion Galvin, however, who goes down this route before heading heading to Aintree. This one landed the National Hunt Chase at the Festival two years ago and was a fine fourth in the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Galvin’s inclusion, if taking to the variety of obstacles jumped on the Cross Country course, adds extra spice, but softer ground is not ideal. Verdict: On going with good in the description, this would go to Galvin. He stays the trip and has been asked to run in conditions that weren’t ideal for him during much of the campaign. Only a softer surface underfoot can scupper his hopes with Delta Work sure to be primed for a bold bid in defence of his crown. Gin On Lime and Deise Aba are suggested speculative each way bets against the top two. The two feature races on Thursday are the Ryanair Chase and Stayers’ Hurdle. There’s one other Grade 1 on the penultimate day’s card and that’s the Turners Novices’ Chase. Supporting these are three very valuable and competitive handicaps, including the Pertemps Final. This is the conclusion of a series of hurdle races contest over around three miles where competing horses must finish in the first four in order to qualify. There’s also a Grade 2 novice hurdle restricted to fillies and mares only held here Gordon Elliott’s Mighty Potter hasn’t put a foot wrong over fences, so looks sure to be popular among Cheltenham tips for the opening Grade 1 Turners Novices’ Chase on the third day of the meeting. Wins at the highest level in the Drinmore around Fairyhouse and during the Dublin Racing Festival set a clear and obvious standard. On better ground and if the New course dried out, Joseph O’Brien could be more confident about Banbridge. He’s won twice at Cheltenham before, including the Martin Pipe over hurdles at last year’s Festival. Impressive from the front in the official Arkle Trial here in November, he shapes like going back up in trip is worth trying again after staying on to be second in the Irish Arkle. Others with course form for the shortlist are Appreciate It, who had an injury-hit campaign last season and only came sixth in the Champion Hurdle prior to that, however, Willie Mullins’ charge won the Supreme by 24 lengths and finished second in the Champion Bumper. He’s a relative latecomer to fences aged nine, however. Stage Star defied topweight in a novices’ handicap chase over the course and distance on Festival Trials Day for Paul Nicholls. His Cheltenham Festival debut ended with him pulling-up in the Ballymore on rain-softened ground last year, so he is out to make amends. Verdict: It’s hard to look past Mighty Potter, who is the clear pick of the Irish contingent. Banbridge would be feared if the going was good, while Stage Star is worth another chance at the Festival as the favourite also flopped here 12 months ago. In the Ryanair Chase, there’ll be no historic hat-trick bid from Allaho as injury keeps him off the track until next season. Emerging as the leading contender in the wake of that news was Shishkin who returned to his awesome best when stepped up in trip to land the Ascot Chase. Willie Mullins has a fine recent record in this event, so shuffles his deck and reroutes Blue Lord to the race. Last year’s Ryanair second Janidil defied a long racecourse absence to win the Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park. Gordon Elliott runs Fury Road rather than Conflated, who tipped up in this race 12 months ago when looking sure of the runner-up spot. Verdict: If the Shiskin who routed his Ascot rivals last time out turns up at Cheltenham, then he wins hands down. Blue Lord and Janidil look best of a depleted Irish challenge. Cheltenham Thursday tips centre on the Stayers’ Hurdle which has a very open look to it. Home By The Lee has clearly progressed since finishing sixth in this race 12 months ago. Dual Stayers’ Hurdle winner Flooring Porter has a hat-trick as his target for the season, but hasn’t had ideal preparation either at home or on the track. Unexposed Blazing Khal and Teahupoo advertised their claims with midwinter victories in the Emerald Isle. The former is two from two at Cheltenham after coming over and winning graded novice hurdles. Teahupoo, meanwhile, is the horse responsible for ending Honeysuckle’s undefeated streak and looked even better when following-up in the Galmoy Hurdle under a penalty. British contenders look very thin on the ground indeed for the Stayers’ Hurdle with French raider Gold Tweet upsetting them in the Cleeve Hurdle on Festival Trials Day. Connections intend to supplement him for the big race on the back of his surprise course and distance success. Verdict: Blazing Khal remains open to the most progress and, while he hasn’t the most ideal preparation, his return to action in the Boyne Hurdle was impressive after 420 days off the track. Teahupoo may get something close to ideal conditions if the rain keeps falling, so is a big danger. Home By The Lee isn’t the easiest ride, but there’s Flooring Porter will bounce in front and try to lead the field a merry dance. In the race registered as the Dawn Run and named in memory of the late Jack De Bromhead this year, the unbeaten Luccia has strong claims. Nicky Henderson could’ve run her in the Supreme after her latest Listed win under a penalty at Exeter where she swept aside the geldings with ease. Magical Zoe has been laid out for the race by Jack’s father Henry De Bromhead, who runs five seeking to score a poignant success. This one, a Grade 3 winner at Down Royal in November, looks the pick of the quintet on all known form. Willie Mullins has a strong record in the race and saddles two. The market is with Lot Of Joy who, although Irish-bred, raced on the Flat in Sweden. She’s shaped like a stayer, while there’s no shortage of stamina with Princess Zoe who has Group 1 success over even further on the level. You Wear It Well is already a winner in this grade at Sandown when last in action, but may find the drop back in trip against her. Similar comments apply to Princess Zoe who dead-heated over 2m 4f. Last year’s runner-up Ahorsewithnoname bids to go one better. Verdict: A trappy race in which potential must be balanced against form in the book, but Luccia is undefeated and looks a seriously good mare. She’ll handle any ground, and has the class and speed to best some of the stayers lining up against her. This has also been the plan for Magical Zoe since the autumn, so she commands respect with any number of other mares believing they can hit the frame. Cheltenham Gold Cup tips dominate on the final day of the Festival and why not. This is the blue riband event of steeplechasing, supported by two more Grade 1s on the card. Those are the Triumph Hurdle for the top four-year-olds over the smaller obstacles and Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle for stayers. The Cheltenham Festival’s newest race, a two-and-a-half mile Mares’ Chase is also part of the Gold Cup day celebrations, alongside a hunter chase, a big field Premier Handicap in the County Hurdle and a conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle. Cheltenham tips day 4 will also include whether experts are for or against long-time Triumph Hurdle favourite Lossiemouth after her shock defeat at the Dublin Racing Festival. Caught in the wrong place at the wrong time when a horse from the same stable and in the same ownership dropped back through the field, fellow filly Gala Marceau profited from her luckless run with Spring Juvenile Hurdle success. Willie Mullins also has Blood Destiny, who remains unexposed to graded company, and four others in the field. Jockey bookings may hold the key to this puzzle with stable jockey Paul Townend opting to ride Lossiemouth and trainer’s son Patrick aboard Blood Destiny with nephew Danny getting the leg up up Gala Marceau again. Verdict: It’s the Mullins camp’s race to lose on paper. Granted better luck in-running, Lossiemouth may demonstrate her superiority over Gala Marceau. With their Leopardstown form put to the test, Blood Destiny is a big danger. Always a race for future staying chasers and the picture remains somewhat murky even after declarations. Three Card Brag has been popular with punters as Gordon Elliott opts to run him here rather than the Martin Pipe. Twice placed in graded company already, the McNeill Family’s horse could do with brushing up his jumping. Corbetts Cross is a rapidly improving type for Emmet Mullins. Now purchased by leading Irish owner JP McManus, connections have decided to go for the Albert Bartlett off the back of a Grade 2 win at Naas over way shorter than this trip. Corbetts Cross has proven his stamina with victory in a Fairyhouse handicap earlier in the campaign. While Embassy Gardens looks the best of Willie Mullins’ trio on paper, three fought out the finish of what looked a hard race at Clonmel. That Grade 3 narrowly went to Monty’s Star from Henry De Bromhead stable companion Hiddenvalley Lake. They re-oppose along with the close-up third Search For Glory. Yet more Irish raiders including Favori De Champdou, also running in the Gigginstown House Stud silks for Elliott, Letsbeclearaboutit and Sandor Clegane have claims on bits and pieces of form. It’s hard to see British contenders landing a blow but Rock My Way and Stay Away Fay look the best of the home team. Verdict: The McManus purchase of Corbetts Cross and his presence in the line-up is very persuasive. There are any number of dangers from among his fellow Emerald Isle raiders with Favori De Champdou one of the more interesting runners. Anything saddled by De Brhomead, who has a good recent Albert Bartlett record, is also worth a second look. Galopin Des Champs fell at the final fence when seemingly cruising to victory in the Turners 12 months ago and is all the rage to make amends in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Some of the biggest challengers to the Mullins horse are Irish, of course, in Grand National hero Noble Yeats and reigning champion A Plus Tard. National Hunt Chase scorer Stattler is sure to stay, while Leopardstown specialist Conflated is a contender if reproducing that form here. The British contenders for Gold Cup glory are King George hero Bravemansgame and Betfair Chase victor Protektorat if he turns up in the same form as his Haydock success. We won’t see L’Homme Presse at the Festival due to injury, however. Verdict: This could be all about Galopin Des Champs making amends for that tumble last year. Noble Yeats is respected, alongside reigning champ A Plus Tard and the stamina-laden Stattler. Bravemansgame and Protektorat could get among the Irish. Willie Mullins has been there or thereabouts in this with Billaway thanks to seconds and a win during the last three years. He’s older now, however, and starting to look really vulnerable to younger, improving types. Vaucelet bids to succeed where David Christie stable companion Winged Leader failed 12 months ago. Famous Clermont, meanwhile, is a rare ride under Rules for Will Biddick these days and commands respect. Verdict: With talent and youth on his side, Vaucelet is the advised play here. He can confirm the impression that Christie has the strongest hand in hunter chases on both sides of the Irish Sea. Famous Clermont is another potential improver, so Billaway has plenty on his plate this time. Who else but Willie Mullins has won the two editions of the newest Cheltenham Festival race, courtesy of Colreevy and Elimay. Last year’s has shown nothing like the same form this term, however, and owner McManus has purchased Colm Murphy’s Impervious with a view to winning this again. Standing in their way are Closutton contenders Allegorie De Vassy, whose tendency to jump right is a concern, and Dolcita. The Irish hand is typically strong and deep thanks to the presence of Jeremys Flame for all that one has had a busy campaign. Magic Daze could’ve run in the Grand Annual, but steps up in trip instead after her Opera Hat win at Naas. Best of the British, especially if the ground remains soft, looks like Zambella. Verdict: After doing absolutely nothing wrong over fences, there shouldn’t be such a disparity in price between Impervious and Allegorie De Vassy. If the latter doesn’t sharpen up, then she will be giving ground away with every jump. Despite lots of racing, the battle-hardened Jeremys Flame could pick up some pieces with Magic Daze not out of it either for all some pundits query her stamina. Ante post betting on Cheltenham involves wagering on runners before race lineups have been confirmed. This is a popular method of Cheltenham betting for many.
