PGA Championship Preview

99 of golf’s top 100 players are headed to Pittsford, New York for the season’s second major, and the anticipation is palpable.

The PGA Championship returns to Oak Hill for the course’s fourth edition, but much has changed since it last hosted the tournament a decade ago, with a full-scale restoration seeing greens and bunkers re-built to better match the original blueprint.

Reclaimed fairways, narrow doglegs and three brand-new holes makes this an entirely different, and challenging prospect for this year’s competitors, of which there are a whole host of leading claimants.

Recently-crowned Masters champion Jon Rahm, last season’s serial winner Scottie Scheffler and a stuttering Rory McIlroy lead the way according to the bookmakers’ estimations, but there are endless narratives across the 156-strong field.

Jordan Spieth is still chasing a career grand slam, although a faulty wrist continues to hold him back. Elsewhere Justin Thomas will be vying to defend his title and become the sixth player to win this tournament three times, while an 18-man band of breakaway competitors will attempt to become the first LIV Golf major winner.

Tip 1: Brooks Koepka @ 18/1 With BetUK

The current frontrunners present little value for golf bettors, with Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler priced at 15/2 and 8/1 respectively.

It therefore may be preferable to look further down the field which is brimming with world-class talent and former major winners, and we have landed with Brooks Koepka as our first pick.

The LIV Golf rebel enjoyed a storming week in Augusta, leading at the 54-hole mark but finishing second to eventual green jacket recipient Jon Rahm – despite slipping at the tail end of the tournament, he appeared primed and ready for a big 2023.

Having already tasted victory in this tournament as a two-time PGA Championship winner, which came in consecutive years (2018 and 2019), he will relish at the chance to join the exclusive three-time winners club.

As pure a striker of the ball as anyone, his monstrous drive and long-iron game will come into play when tackling the course re-design, which features several tricky holes including bunker-laden hourglass on 15, and a tiny green on 17.

His recent showing at the Masters is as good enough evidence as any to take a chance on him here, and his two Wanamaker trophies only add to his tournament know-how.

Tip 2: Jason Day Each-Way @ 25/1 With BetUK

With BetUK paying seven places for each-way selections, our larger value selection goes to Jason Day.

There are few players in this year’s line-up with the short-game Day possesses, and against the field he ranks 26th in strokes gained, and sixth in total strokes gained this year.

Battling his vertigo problem is always cause for concern, but when healthy there simply aren’t many better, particularly at this price.

He enters this contest off the back of a victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson on Sunday, his first tournament win since 2018, and he has all the tools to excel at this course which lends itself to expert manoeuvres around the green.
