Highfield Princess Faces New Challengers Among Nunthorpe Stakes Runners

There are both familiar foes and new dangers for John Quinn’s popular mare Highfield Princess on the Knavesmire. She comes to this effective home game off the back of a bloodless victory at Goodwood races in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes during the Glorious meeting earlier in the month.

Bradsell has a 4lb swing in the weights against him to overcome from the King’s Stand, but remains unexposed at the minimum trip of 5f for trainer Archie Watson. It’s these revised terms which explain why horse racing betting sites favour Highfield Princess over the three-year-old and other Nunthorpe Stakes runners in how they price up the race.

Juvenile colt Big Evs was supplemented for this by trainer Mick Appleby and his ambitious connections. 1. Equality

Made some progress this summer when backing up a handicap win at Windsor races with Group 3 success at Sandown on Coral Eclipse day. Softer ground didn’t suit when an eased seventh at Glorious Goodwood latest.

2. Khaadem

Took form to a new level when springing 80/1 shock in the 6f Group 1 Royal Ascot sprint on quick ground in June. Four lengths to find with Highfield Princess on last year’s run in this race, but has won pattern races at this trip. One of the Nunthorpe Stakes runners you can’t entirely rule out if going remains fast.

3. Live In The Dream

Placed in both the Palace House and Temple Stakes after handicap wins at Lingfield races and Pontefract earlier in the year. Group 2 form boosted earlier in the week, but there’s plenty to find with the market principals on official figures.

4. Regional

Placed in last year’s Stewards’ Cup and improved since then. Followed-up on course and distance handicap victory on reappearance with Listed successes at Haydock races latest and form advertised by runner-up here. One of a few Nunthorpe Stakes runners with realistic each way hopes.

5. Tees Spirit

Won The Dash at Epsom races last year and a Listed sprint in Ireland. This a whole different proposition, however, and showed no further improvement in three runs this season. Discounted.

6. Twilight Calls

Second in last year’s Temple Stakes and the King’s Stand. Beaten favourite in the Palace House at Newmarket races on reappearance and down the field at Haydock again, but step back in right direction with Royal Ascot fourth latest. Jockey booking makes him one of the more interesting Nunthorpe Stakes runners in the line-up.

7. Aesop’s Fables

Kept fresh since Listed third at Newbury races to subsequent Commonwealth Cup and July Cup hero Shaquille. Powerful connections trying to reinvent last year’s Curragh 7f Group 2 winner as a sprinter. First step into open company and improvement needed.

8. Bradsell

Successfully supplemented for the King’s Stand and just held Highfield Princess by a length latest. Survived Royal meeting stewards’ enquiry at Ascot races, but now meets runner-up on 4lb worse terms. Open to further progress at the minimum trip, however, and wide-margin course 6f winner on racecourse debut. Has to be on any shortlist of Nunthorpe Stakes runners to back.

9. Get Ahead

Four-year-old filly denied just a short-head in a Chantilly Group 2 over this trip on her penultimate start. That effort and Listed 6f win at Haydock prior to it encouraging, but disappointing three-length sixth and nearest at the finish behind Equality latest. Needs a major step forward here.

10. Highfield Princess

Likeably tough, consistent and speedy mare that won this race 12 months ago. Went on to complete Group 1 hat-trick on Irish Champions Weekend and then far from disgraced when fourth at the Breeders’ Cup. Placed in the Duke Of York here on reappearance and in both Royal Ascot sprints before facile Group 2 success latest. The one that all other Nunthorpe Stakes runners have to beat.

11. Ladies Church

Form figures outside of Ireland read 0290. Weakened into tenth and beaten almost nine length by Highfield Princess the last day, so difficult to make a case for. Pedigree suggests she wants further.

12. Makarova

In the frame behind Regional, Equality and Highfield Princess latest. Between efforts at Haydock and Sandown races, she landed a Listed event at Ayr before Group 3 second and Glorious Goodwood fourth. Some 4 1/2 lengths to find with the favourite on that form, but more consistent than most Nunthorpe Stakes runners have been of late. Could outrun her odds.

13. Nymphadora

Dual course and distance winner at Listed level including City Walls here at John Smith’s Cup meeting on penultimate start. Has disappointing Glorious Goodwood effort to bounce back from latest, but clearly loves the Knavesmire.

14. Dramatised

Dual Group 2 winner including on reappearance at Haydock with form franked by runner-up earlier in the Ebor Festival. Likes quick ground and was runner-up at the Breeders’ Cup in Juvenile Turf Sprint. Needs to bounce back from disappointing display at Royal Ascot, but one of the Nunthorpe Stakes runners open to further progress.

15. Queen Me

Runner-up in last year’s Lowther Stakes and also placed at Ayr races in Group 3 company as a juvenile. Yet to match her two-year-old form this year with tame ninth in the 1000 Guineas and keeping on sixth in the Commonwealth Cup latest. Dropping back in trip doesn’t leap out as the answer.

16. Big Evs

Supplemented juvenile colt who steps up in grade and into open company after Listed success at Royal Ascot and Group 3 victory at Glorious Goodwood latest. Terms of the race put the weights in his favour, but The Platinum Queen tried and fail to cash-in on these favourable terms 12 months ago. Still commands respect and the most lightly-raced of all Nunthorpe Stakes runners this year.
