Ayr Racecourse Fixtures & Events

Ayr races today

Historians trace horse races at Ayr today back to 1576 during the reign of King James VI of Scotland (later James I of England). It wasn’t until a couple of centuries later, however, that the first official meeting took place in 1771. That was in the Seafield area of the town with documents saying that course had tight bends and a full circuit was only a mile round.

Although inaugurated in 1804, the Ayr Gold Cup – one of Scotland’s most historic horse racing events – became a handicap some 51 years later. The growth of Ayr races today wouldn’t have been possible if a new site for a track hadn’t been found in 1907 in the Craigie area. Ayr Racecourse has been at this location on the floodplain of the River Ayr close to its mouth where it empties into the Firth of Clyde ever since.

The inspiration for races at Ayr today in terms of course layout came from Newbury races down in Berkshire. Both are left-handed and relatively flat, galloping tracks. The only difference is with the length of the straight course. At Ayr, this is six furlongs for the premier sprint handicap in Scotland, if not the whole of Europe. Newbury’s straight track for Flat races is a mile long. Other prestigious races held at Ayr Racecourse include the Scottish Champion Hurdle and Grand National.

Configuration of Ayr Races Today

When Bogside Racecourse, situated a dozen miles north, closed in the mid-1960s, Ayr assumed hosting duties for the Scottish Grand National. They were only able to do this because a jumps track for National Hunt horse racing events was installed in 1950. The round course at Ayr Racecourse is a mile-and-a-half for a complete circuit.

There is a chute in the back straight for mile-and-a-quarter races on the Flat, plus one in the home straight for steeplechases over two miles or three-and-a-quarter miles. The hurdles track has three flights down the back and as many after turning for home. On the chase course, meanwhile, the third of four fences in the back straight is an open ditch.

After jumping the cross fence, there are four more in the home straight. The second one of those down is another open ditch. Horses competing in the Scottish Grand National must complete three circuits of the track and cross 27 fences over four gruelling miles. In that event, the field in the race passes the winning post three times. Due to its proximity to both river and sea, the going can get very heavy during the winter.

Ayr Gold Cup Festival / Western Meeting

The Western Meeting at Ayr races today is called the Ayr Gold Cup Festival nowadays and its centrepiece dates back well over 200 years. A sprint Heritage Handicap on the Flat over six furlongs, the Ayr Gold Cup is so oversubscribed that there are not one but two consolation sprint races for horses that miss the cut. Here is a day-by-day breakdown of the action.

Ayr Gold Cup Festival Day 1 – Kilkerran Cup

There’s a low key start to the meeting with the Kilkerran Cup headlining the opening day. This middle-distance handicap is just one of many such events across the Western Meeting race days. Here is the card in full:

My Prospero, Doonside Cup, Ayr (23 Sept, 1:50)

Dropping My Prospero into Listed company where he’s 6lb and upwards clear of the field on adjusted ratings for the 1m 2f Doonside Cup on Ayr Gold Cup day is a move designed to get a confidence-boosting win into him. Fitted with first-time cheekpieces by trainer William Haggas, this four-year-old Iffraaj colt hasn’t quite built on the promise of last season.

The fact remains, however, that a horse rated 119 should take all the beating now that connections’ sights have been lowered. My Prospero won a Group 2 over this trip in France last summer and was a half-length third in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. If reproducing that form or his latest run when second to Alflaila in the York Stakes, then he should be winning this hands down.

What dangers there are in this much easier assignment are mainly types looking to progress out of handicaps. Glorious Goodwood winner Royal Rhyme is super-sub for last year’s impressive Doonside Cup scorer Royal Champion in the same ownership with that one not declared for a defence of his title.

Trained by Karl Burke, this three-year-old Lope De Vega colt is unbeaten with soft in the going description but steps up in grade to a new level. Royal Rhyme really delivered with cut in the ground when landing the Kincsem Handicap last time out, earning a 13lb rise from the assessor. Further rain will help his cause.

With Royal Rhyme preferred as the potential improver to Pride Of America, who only just scrambled home in the John Smith’s Cup two starts ago, Irish raider Helvic Dream is an each way angle to consider on the pick of his form. Noel Meade’s six-year-old Power gelding sprung a major shock when landing the 2021 Tattersalls Gold Cup.

Reproducing that sensational effort has proved elusive, but Helvic Dream put in his best display since Group 1 glory on his latest outing. He was only beaten just over a couple of lengths by stable companion Layfayette in the Royal Whip back at the Curragh the last day.

The winner wasn’t disgraced when third under a penalty in another Group 3 on Irish Champions Weekend and the runner-up landed a Listed event in her previous race. It’s better form than most of the home team can boast. If taking another step forward, then it’d be no surprise if Helvic Dream at least hit the frame here.
