Musselburgh Racing Tips On New Year’s Day 2024: Two LIVE ITV Races For Horse Racing Fans

The big New Year’s Day Cheltenham fixture is the horse racing card that grabs most of the headlines as we welcome in 2024. However, Musselburgh plays a nice supporting role to the Prestbury Park action and with the ITV cameras heading to the Scottish track to take in two races, then they get their day in the winter sun too.

It’s at 1:10pm that we see the first of the LIVE ITV races at Musselburgh for a competitive Handicap Hurdle over 2m4f, where all eyes will be on last year’s winner Benson to see if he can land the spoils again for trainer Sandy Thomson.

ITV horse racing fans will then have to wait an hour for the next Musselburgh live race at 2:20pm, which is a 2m 4 1/2f Handicap Chase. Another decent field but with the last two runnings going to the market leader then favourite backers will be keen to know this.

The Dan Skelton yard won the prize in 2021, so could it be significant they are sending another up this year in Frere D’Armes, who will have the useful Tristain Durrell in the saddle to claim a handy 5lbs.

Let’s take a look at the two LIVE ITV Musselburgh races in more detail.

The Jennie Candlish-trained Matchless is a proven course winner at Musselburgh and from his eight career runs has only been out of the first three once (3 wins). He’s expected to not be far away, but it’s interesting that we’ve also got last year’s winner – BENSON – back for more.

This race would have been a big target for this Sandy Thomson runner again and he’s warmed up for this with a solid fourth in a decent race at Aintree in December. He’s been dropped a pound for that run and will have regular rider Ryan Mania back in the saddle.

Benson bolted up by 11-lengths from Holmes St George, who goes again too, last year in this and despite being 8lbs higher hand plenty in-hand that day to suggest he’s up to the rise in the ratings.

Having been pulled-up in their last races Bass Rock and Cooper’s Cross have a bit to prove. Oldtimer Cracking Destiny turned back the clock to beat Fidelio Vallis here last time and can go well again off just a 5lb higher mark.

While Half Shot was another recent winner at the Scottish venue last time out, when slamming Inis Oirr by 10 lengths. This Iain Jardine runner is up another 7lbs and also up in grade but heads here in tip-top order so has to be respected.

But the interesting one is the Dan Skelton runner FRERE D’ARMES, who ran the useful Boothill to 1/2 a length at Ascot last time out. He’s up just a pound for that run and connections are also sticking with the claimer Tristan Durrell to take off 5lbs.

He was also hampered a tad that last day so might have even won. The slight question mark is the step up in trip to 2m 4 1/2f here but Musselburgh is a much easier and flatter track than Ascot so there is every reason to think he’s up to the task.

The final icing on the cake is the Skelton yard also won this race in 2021 with Romain De Senam, which is a good sign this is a race they like to earmark.
