Lay Of The Day Tip: Andy Newton’s Horse To Oppose On Thursday 22nd February

Andy Newton continues with his horse racing Lay Of The Day tips on Thursday 22nd February 2024, where he’s got one runner to take on at Chelmsford races.

Lay Of The Day Tip For Horse Racing: Thursday 22nd February 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Thursday come from Lingfield, Chelmsford and Newcastle (AW)

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM. Where you can get a £40 free bet below – you choose!

Note: Most lays selected will be priced reasonably at 4/1 or shorter. However, if any should drift before the race to a much bigger price and liability, they are probably best avoided.

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Thursday: 4:05pm Chelmsford – NORTHCLIFF

This Class 5 Handicap over 6f on the AW at Chelmsford is pretty desperate stuff, but one horse still has to win it.

Course winners Thank The Lord and Josies Kid have claims based on that, while Come On Girl and First Company (along with Thank The Lord) are the only past distance winners in the field.

However, it’s the Murphy/Keady runner NORTHCLIFF that looks worth opposing for me.

Yes, he’s been knocking at the door in recent runs but the fact remains he’s still a maiden from 23 runs, which is the first big concern.

He’s down another pound here from a 4th at Wolves last time out and also needs to overcome a 2-month break – with that last outing coming in December.

This will also only be his fourth career run on the AW, but also his first here at Chelmsford, so this will be a slight unknown too.

Draw 8 makes life harder still and the form of the yard at the track with their 4+ year-old reads 0-from-21.

A change of jockey might help as the useful Sean Levey rides for the first time – but the horse has had eight different pilots in the past and they all failed to break his maiden tag.

Overall, there seems enough to look elsewhere for the winner here with a horse that is yet to prove he can win a race and is running at the Essex venue for the first time too.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
