Lay Of The Day Tip: Andy Newton’s Horse To Oppose On Friday 23rd February

Andy Newton continues with his horse racing Lay Of The Day tips on Friday 23rd February 2024, where he’s got one runner to take on at Wolverhampton races.

Lay Of The Day Tip For Horse Racing: Friday 23rd February 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Friday come from Exeter, Sedgefield and Wolverhampton (AW).

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM. Where you can get a £40 free bet below – you choose!

Note: Most lays selected will be priced reasonably at 4/1 or shorter. However, if any should drift before the race to a much bigger price and liability, they are probably best avoided.

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Friday: 5:30pm Wolverhampton – ALMODOVAR DEL RIO

The Marco Botti-trained ALMODOVAR DEL RIO will certainly catch the eye of punters after a close second last time at Southwell.

But despite that improved run, and this not looking a great race, there are several things for this 5 year-old to overcome.

Firstly, he’s recorded just the one career win from 18 tries and the worry, if I were a backer, would be this also came on the grass at Brighton. He’s run 13 times on the AW and is still a maiden on the sand surfaces.

Next up is the trip. That sole win also came over 6f and to date he’s tried this 7f trip ten times and been beaten on each occasion.

The handicapper has hiked him up 2lbs for that last win too, while he’s also tried Wolverhampton five times and is also yet to score there.

Connections are also reaching for the first-time visor, which might help, but it may also tell us the horse is not the most trustworthy and they are still trying to eke out more despite being exposed with 18 runs.

Finally, the Botti yard have had a few winners of late, but their overall form at the track with their 4+ year-olds is just 6-from-63 (10%)

Plus, jockey Josephine Gordon’s track stats are less inspiring. The female rider is only 9-from-209 at Wolves and an even worse 2-from-107 when riding 4+ year-olds.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
