Does Grand National-Winning Trainer Lucinda Russell Have Runners In Saturday’s Scottish Grand National?

Scottish-based trainer Lucinda Russell bagged her second Aintree Grand National – this time with Corach Rambler on Saturday, but now it’s all systems go towards another Grand National – the Scottish version this weekend. Can Lucinda Russell perform a remarkable Grand National double inside a week?

Grand National Bandwagon Heads To Scotland

The Grand National bandwagon heads north of the border this Saturday as all eyes will be on the Coral sponsored Scottish Grand National at Ayr racecourse.

We can expect a big field of staying chasers hunting the £112,540 first prize.

It’s the Christian Williams-trained Kitty’s Light currently topping the Scottish Grand National betting – the Welsh-based yard also won the race last year with Win My Wings.

However, it will be another trainer that punters will be searching for ahead of the 4m Ayr race – Lucinda Russell – after the popular Scottish-based trainer won her second Aintree Grand National last Saturday with Corach Rambler.

Russell joined Jenny Pitman as the only female trainer to win the National twice after her One For Arthur also won the world-famous race in 2017. Venetia Williams is the only other lady handler to win the Liverpool contest (Mon Mome, 2009).

Does Lucinda Russell Have Any 2023 Scottish Grand National Runners?

Let’s see which horses Lucinda Russell currently has entered for the 2023 Scottish Grand National.

YOUR OWN STORY @ 13/2

This 7 year-old is likely to be Lucinda Russell’s main Scottish Grand National runner if confirmed for the race later this week. He brings a consistent profile to the table with six ‘top three’ finishes from his 7 runs over fences. He was last seen running a close second at Haydock in March over 3m 4 1/2f and was also a winner over 3m 7f at Wetherby this season, so staying is his game.

Your Own Story is also likely to get into the race with a light weight and rated only 3lbs higher than his last outing. At the age of 7 is also a horse that should have more to come, plus he’s tasted the Ayr track in the past too – running second here back in January. He could have a big chance.

MIGHTY THUNDER @ 20/1

Mighty Thunder actually won the Scottish Grand National for Lucinda Russell in 2021 (watch below) and could be back for more this Saturday. Was pulled up in the Aintree National in 2022 and since winning this two years ago is yet to win another race (10 runs). Still only 10 years-old though and due to his run of poor form has dropped to a very attractive handicap mark. He won the Scottish National off a rating of 144, but is now rated just 125 – a massive 19lbs lower.

Mighty Thunder is still to be a confirmed runner for Saturday’s 2023 Scottish Grand National. However, despite having a bit to prove at the moment is hard to rule out coming from the in-form Russell yard and with a potential featherweight. Could be a lively outsider.

Has a Trainer Won the Grand National and Scottish Grand National in The Same Season?

Yes. As mentioned, the famous Red Rum, who won three Grand Nationals in the 1970’s also added the Scottish Grand National to his CV in 1974. He was trained by Ginger McCain.

Unlike this year, the Scottish National in 1974 fell three weeks after the Aintree race, which came McCain and his stable staff enough time to prepare Red Rum for Ayr race.
