Wetherby Racecourse Events & Fixtures

Wetherby races today

The current site of Wetherby Racecourse, off York Road, saw the sport of horse racing first held here in 1891. Prior to this date, there were meetings for much of the Victorian period on Wetherby Ings located hard by the River Wharfe on the other side of the West Yorkshire market town.

Spectators watched from Scaur Bank when racing moved there in 1842. As the Ings often flooded, the decision was taken to move location half-a-century later. Wetherby races today sit some 12 miles west of the York races on the Knavesmire in the Vale of York by the River Ouse and about as far northeast of Leeds city centre.

Lying between two of Yorkshire’s big urban centres, it’s a popular destination for National Hunt action over the winter months, hosting the area’s big Christmastime meeting on Boxing Day and the day after.

Flat & National Hunt Venue Today

Despite this strong local association with steeplechasing dating back to the Nineteenth Century, Wetherby Racecourse first hosted a Flat card in April 2015. Diversifying from just jump meetings to keep the track open over the summer months made business sense.

The major race over the festive period is a Premier Handicap chase named after Rowland Meyrick, a former Clerk of the Course, was first run on Boxing Day in 1957. This event was introduced the same year as the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury races, a fellow contest for staying steeplechasers. That venue is a track with which this course has plenty in common.

Only behind York and Doncaster races in terms of important tracks in Yorkshire, there are a couple of graded races at Wetherby today. Chief among those is the Charlie Hall Chase, another staying event but this one is called after a famous local trainer. It was first run in 1969 as the Wetherby Pattern Chase with his name added in 1978.

Configuration of Wetherby Races Today

A left-handed track that runs slightly downhill in the back straight and uphill after turning for home, Wetherby Racecourse suits galloping types. A complete circuit is about a mile-and-a-half round. There is no straight course for Flat sprints with a little chute on the home bend for events over an extended five furlongs.

Other Flat races at Wetherby today have a variety of distances on the main course from seven furlongs up to beyond two miles. As an oval-shaped track with easy bends, there are six flights of hurdles on a complete circuit. Three of those are taken down the back with the same again up the home straight. The last of these before the winning post is only jumped twice in the West Yorkshire Hurdle, even though the three-mile start is before it.

There are nine fences on a full lap of a steeplechase, meanwhile. Wetherby races today include two open ditches as the second and last of five in the back straight. After turning for home, horses then face four plain fences in less than half-a-mile before the line. There are usually 19 jumps in both standout races over fences, the Charlie Hall and Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase with the last before the winning post taken three times.

Key Meetings & Races at Wetherby Today

Although there isn’t a Grade 1 event at Wetherby Racecourse, there are three Grade 2s across two of the track’s feature meetings. These are the West Yorkshire Hurdle and Charlie Hall Chase during two race days at the end of October or start of November, and the Towton Novices’ Chase, which has moved to January from February and run over a new distance as of the 2023-24 National Hunt season.

Of the many handicaps held at Wetherby races today, only the Rowland Meyrick held on Boxing Day is the best known and one of two Premier Handicaps at the course. The Castleford Chase, run each year on 27 December, as part of the Yorkshire Christmas Meeting, is another famous event.

Charlie Hall Meeting

On the last Friday and Saturday of October or first in November, the two-day Charlie Hall Meeting gives horses an opportunity to run early in the core National Hunt season. Supporting races here include two Listed events in the Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle for three-year-olds and the Wetherby Mares’ Hurdle.

No Risk Des Flos E/W, bet365 Premier Handicap Chase, Wetherby (3 Nov, 3:00)

After a Stratford double on Thursday, Olly Murphy’s stable is in fine form, so multiple course winner No Risk Des Flos looks one to back each way in the extended 2m 3f Premier Handicap Chase at Wetherby on day one of their Charlie Hall Meeting. The eight-year-old No Risk At All gelding is a genuine course specialist.

No Risk Des Flos is four out of five at the West Yorkshire venue for owner Diana Whateley, scoring over course and distance back in January. Off just 3lb higher for that three-length victory on soft ground, a repeat of that puts him firmly in the mix here. Sean Bowen is again aboard, which only adds to the each way appeal of No Risk Des Flos.

War Lord Looks Well-Handicapped

Joe Tizzard sends War Lord up to Wetherby for this and he looks well-treated on the pick of his form now 6lb below his last winning mark. This eight-year-old grey son of Jukebox Jury chased home Gemirande over course and distance in February off 5lb higher.

That form has been advertised by the fourth home, Jetoile, who came out and won the Old Roan at Aintree. War Lord has had wind surgery over the summer and doesn’t mind soft ground. With the yard enjoying a few winners over the last couple of weeks, his reduced mark of 140 looks exploitable.

Famous Bridge a Contender

Shan Blue heads the betting with memories of his fall when seemingly cruising to victory in the Charlie Hall two years ago sticking in the minds of bookies and punters alike. Dual course winner Famous Bridge stays further and that could be a plus on the forecast ground.

Well-weighted for trainer Nicky Richards and sporting the silks of the late Trevor Hemmings, this seven-year-old Fame And Glory gelding scored twice here in March. Although he’s gone up 6lb for those extended 2m 5f and 3m victories, a revised mark of 128 doesn’t look beyond Famous Bridge whose stamina is not in doubt.

Frero Banbou Also Well-Treated

Venetia Williams runners go best when mud flies, meanwhile, and Frero Banbou is 9lb lower than when runner-up in a Premier Handicap like this at Ascot on reappearance last term. A typical French import to the stable, this eight-year-old son of Apsis chased home the ill-fated Thyme White on ground faster than ideal 12 months ago.

Frero Banbou was then fourth in the Hurst Park off the same mark. The assessor has since relented, but takes a real chance of back form with him now lb below his last winning mark. Charlie Deutsch is again aboard, so Frero Banbou could hit the frame once more here.

Thyme Hill, West Yorkshire Hurdle, Wetherby (4 Nov, 2:25)

Going over fences hasn’t really worked out for Thyme Hill, but he’s a very classy staying hurdler on his day, so gets the vote to land the 3m Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle at Wetherby on Charlie Hall Chase day. Training duo Philip Hobbs & Johnson White have been in good form in recent days, so this might be the right time to catch him.

Thyme Hill, a nine-year-old Kayf Tara gelding, is a three-time Grade 1 winner but escapes penalties here because the last of those in the Kauto Star was achieved over fences. Given his fine record fresh and with the stable going well, it looks a good opportunity for him to deliver.

Veteran Dashel Drasher Respected

If Dashel Drasher reproduces his Cheltenham Stayers’ Hurdle second from March, then that sets a clear and obvious standard. Jeremy Scott’s 10-year-old son of Passing Glance kept hitting the frame last term after scoring when heavily eased in grade on reappearance at Aintree.

The question is whether Dashel Drasher really stays this trip. He tops official ratings on a mark of 159, but does look vulnerable given his veteran status. With his yard enjoying two of its three winners this season in recent days, Dashel Drasher is certainly in the mix on the pick of his form.

Penalised Botox Has Best of Rest

As for the remainder, the others all have upwards of 10lb to find on these terms or official figures. Lanzarote runner-up Red Risk has stamina to prove, while Irish raider Ambitious Fellow is out to show he’s better than a handicapper.

Ga Law is probably using this as a pipe-opener for fences, so joint topweight Botox Has is the each way alternative by default. Trained by Gary Moore, this seven-year-old Dream Well gelding won a Premier Handicap on another flat, left-handed galloping track at Haydock just less than a year ago.
