A Plus Tard Retired, With Last Win Coming In The 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Horse racing fans witnessed A Plus Tard winning the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Festival and after a couple of years of minor setbacks that success will remain his last victory.

His owners Cheveley Park Stud and trainer Henry de Bromhead announced on Thursday 18th January that A Plus Tard will now be retired. With his last race a lack-lustre display in the Savills Chase over Christmas.

Prior to that Leopardstown run, A Plus Tard was a well-beaten third to Shishkin in the Aintree Bowl last April at the Grand National Meeting. While before that was pulled up in his Gold Cup title defence run in 2023, behind Galopin Des Champs.

A Plus Tard History Maker For Jockey Rachael Blackmore

Top female jumps jockey Rachael Blackmore will be forever thankful for her association with A Plus Tard after she became the first lady rider to land the Cheltenham Gold Cup (watch below).

Blackmore rode A Plus Tard in ALL bar one of his races 17 races since he came over to Ireland from France in 2018. Darragh O’Keefe was the only other jockey to ride him in Ireland, with that coming in his 2020 Savills Chase win at Leopardstown.

A Plus Tard and Rachael Blackmore had a total of five races together, with by-far their most memorable the 15-length 2022 Gold Cup trouncing of former winner Minella Indo.

That Gold Cup win prompted the Racing Post to give him a rating of 183, which only Kauto Star (185), Denman/Galopin Des Champs (184) have bettered in the modern era.

The pair also teamed up to take the Betfair Chase at Haydock in 2021 (watch below). Beating course specialist Royale Pagaille by a monster 22-lengths.
