Everyone loves a grey horse – right? Well, the Epsom Derby is fast approaching and we’re here to tell you which grey horses are running in this year’s English Classic and better yet, we’ll also tell you how many grey horses have won the Epsom Derby. 

Epsom Derby Grey Horses: How Many Are There This Year?

This year’s Epsom Derby will see TWO grey horses lineup for the race.

White Birch – 11/1 with Star Sports

White Birch, who was a recent runner-up in the Dante Stakes at York and will be a popular pick to go one better in the 2023 Epsom Derby ahead of the highly-anticipated race.

Trained by John Joseph Murphy in Ireland, this gorgeous grey was last seen running The Foxes to a neck in the 2023 Dante Stakes at York – staying on well to finish in second.

While the Dante is often seen as a top Derby Trial – with 5 horses in the last 20 years winning both races.

King Of Steel – 50/1 with Star Sports

The other grey horse in the race is King Of Steel, who is trained by Roger Varian. However he is yet to race since transferring to Varian’s stable from David Loughnane’s. He is a a huge outsider for the race, but connections believe he has every chance of outrunning his odds.

Varian said: : “He’s taking a rather unconventional route to the Derby but he’s bred to get the trip and I believe he’s capable of outrunning his odds.”

King Of Steel is a much darker grey than most grey horses, but still stands out from his rivals with a beautiful coat.

Epsom Derby Grey Horses: How Many Have Won The Race Before?

The last time a grey horse triumphed in the Epsom Derby was way back in 1946 when Airbourne did all the running. While in total there have only been four Derby-winning greys.

More recently Silver Patriarch (1997) and Terimon (1989) were both grey Derby runners-up.
