Cheltenham Day One Tips: Tuesday 14th March 2023 – All Eyes on Constitution Hill
Day one of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival gets going – as always – with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the big ‘Cheltenham Roar’. However, the opening day’s action is headlined by the Champion Hurdle at 3:30pm where all eyes will be on Constitution Hill. The star hurdle looks to give trainer Nicky Henderson a nineth win in the race and if returning at 4/11 or less – will become the shortest-priced Champion Hurdle winner ever!
Cheltenham Festival 1-2-3 Best Bets on Day One
1.30: Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle ITV1
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: Facile Vega will be the focus here after flopping last time out and losing her unbeaten record. He went off too fast that day, so will be ridden differently this time, but a massive 23 of the last 26 winners of this won last time out. He could easily bounce back, but we’d rather see it on the track first. Marine Nationale will be a leading alternative – winning all four starts. This Irish raider heads here fresh too with his last run back in earlu December. But IL ETAIT TEMPS (e/w) was the winner of the race (Ireland Novice Hurdle) Facile Vega flopped in and looks worth sticking with. Danny Mullins continues in the saddle and has tasted Cheltenham before when 5th in last year’s Triumph.
- IL ETAIT TEMPS
- MARINE NATIONALE
- FACILE VEGA
2.10: Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase ITV1
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: This year’s Arkle looks a matchup between JONBON and El Fabiolo, with the former just preferred. He was runner up in the Supreme last season but has switched to fences this season and is 3-from-3. Yes, he had to work hard last time at Warwick, but the stiffer Cheltenham track looks a plus here. He also beat El Fabiolo (hurdles) at Aintree last season. El Fabiolo has also done nothing wrong since moving to chasing (2-from-2). He was a nice winner of the Irish Arkle last time and is sure to make Jonbon fight all the way for this. Saint Roi and Dysart Dynamo can fight it out for third.
- JONBON
- EL FABIOLO
- SAINT ROI
2.50: Ultima Handicap Chase ITV1
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: Last year’s winner Corach Rambler will be popular, but is 6lbs higher this time. Oscar Elite has popular in the betting too and was a tidy winner at Ascot last time out. This Tizzard runner is up only 4lbs for that and was 3rd in this race last year off a pound lower. But a chance is taken on the Jonjo O’Neill runner MONBEG GENIUS (e/w). The yard won this race in 2014 with Holywell and this 7 year-old has caught the eye in winning his last three. Still only 7 years-old he could have more in the locker, despite being hiked up 8lbs for his last win. The Cheltenham day one trends also see 18 of the last 23 winners were rated 143 or less.
- MONBEG GENIUS
- CORACH RAMBLER
- OSCAR ELITE
3.30: Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy ITV1
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: Three Festival winners from last year taking each other on here. But it will be one of the shocks of the Festival is the big Cheltenham banker – CONSTITUTION HILL – is beaten here. Won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle with ease last season and can become the first horse since Bula (1971) to follow-up in the Champion Hurdle the following year. State Man, who won the County 12 months ago, is no slouch and impressed in the Irish Champion Hurdle last time but is likely to find Constitution Hill too pacey. Vauban, last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner can take bronze.
- CONSTITUTION HILL
- STATE MAN
- VAUBAN

4.10: Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle ITV1
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: There will be no bigger roar this week if Honeysuckle can end her career with a fourth Festival win. She is the two-time Champion Hurdle winner and also took this race in 2020. However, her unbeaten bubble has burst this season and looks on the downturn. Taking on her own sex here, but no mares 7lbs allowance as a result. So, a chance is taken on MARIE’S ROCK, who we now know runs here instead of the Stayers’ Hurdle on Thursday. She landed this race last year – beating Queen’s Brook – and has won both starts since. She can become the first back-to-back winner since Quevega. Other proven Festival winner Love Envoi should make a bold bid too.
- MARIE’S ROCK
- LOVE ENVOI
- HONEYSUCKLE
4.50: Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle RTV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: Wide open race with the Willie Mullins-trained Tekao being a warm order for this in the betting. His owner JP McManus also won this race last year, but the niggle is Mullins doesn’t have a great record in the race (0-from-18). The interesting one is BAD with Rachael Blackmore riding. This Ben Pauling runner is having his first run in since coming over from France, but won well on his last run there. Blackmore is an obvious plus in the plate and 13 of the last 18 winners were rated between 124-134. Of the rest, Gordon Elliott does well in this race, so his Jazzy Matty can go well too, as can Byker from the shred Charles Byrnes camp.
- BAD
- JAZZY MATTY
- BYKER
5.30: NH Challenge Cup Novices’ Chase RTV
SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 CHELTENHAM TIPS: GAILLARD DU MESNIL is not the quickest horse, but does have a bit of class as a stayer. He was third in the Irish Grand National last season so this 3m6f trip will be fine and was a fine third to Mighty Potter last time. He can give Willie Mullins his third winner since 2018. The yard could have a 1-2 as well, with Ramilles sure to go well too, while Chemical Energy for Gordon Elliott should not be far away. He’s ridden by top amateur Jamie Codd, who has won this race three times since 2015.
- GAILLARD DU MESNIL
- RAMILLIES
- CHEMICAL ENERGY
