Stayers’ Hurdle Runners 2023: Teahupoo a Big Fancy For Gordon Elliott

Teahupoo

The Stayers’ Hurdle Betting Indicates Another Irish Win

Despite the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle only producing five Irish trained winners since 1996 – it’s worth noting that four of these successes have come since 2017, so there looks to be a turning point with this trend.

Flooring Porter, for Ireland, has also won the last two renewals and could be back for more if recovering from an injury in time, but with the first four in the 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle betting (Blazing Khal, Teahupoo, Home By The Lee and Flooring Porter) all coming from the Emerald Isle, then it’s looking likely that this recent Irish boom this big Thursday Festival race will continue.

Teahupoo Looking to Give Gordon Elliott His First Stayers Hurdle Win

The Gordon Elliott-trained Teahupoo has been popular in the Stayers’ Hurdle betting since winning his last two races at Fairyhouse and Gowran Park – he’s won 8 of this 11 starts over hurdles, so it’s fair to say he wins more often than not! This 6 year-old, who was a well beaten 9th in the Champion Hurdle last season, is currently one of the joint-favourites @ 11/4 with BetUK and has looked a better horse now upped in trip his season.

Teahupoo will be hoping to give trainer Gordon Elliott his first Stayers’ Hurdle win.

Charles Byrnes Hopes to Follow-up 2013 Stayers’ Hurdle Win with Blazing Khal

Some may remember trainer Charles Byrnes having the winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle back in 2013 with the useful Solwhit – ridden by Paul Carberry.

However, since then, he’s not had much ammo to go to war with in this sphere – but that has changed this season with Blazing Khal, who is the other joint-favourite for the Stayers’ Hurdle @ 11/4 with BetUK .

This 7 year-old has had a few training setbacks having been off the track for 428 days and missing all of 2022, but came back recently when winning well at Navan to show punters he’s still got plenty of ability. He’s 4-from-4 over hurdles and being a proven course and distance winner at Cheltenham too, then it’s easy to see why he’s at the forefront of the betting.

French Raider Gold Tweet Was Supplemented After Cleeve Hurdle Win

The Cleeve Hurdle is often a good guide towards the Stayers’ Hurdle – in recent years 8 of the last 20 winners contested that Cheltenham Trials Day race before taking this, so this year’s winner Gold Tweet is another interesting runner after being supplemented for the race by connections.

Trained in France, by Gabriel Leenders this 6 year-old has won 4 of his 10 races over hurdles and having won already at the track with know Prestbury Park suits. Gold Tweet will be looking to become the first French-trained Stayers’ Hurdle winner since Baracouda.

Klassical Dream Could Give Willie Mullins Third Stayers’ Win

Another Irish Stayers’ Hurdle runner with a fair chance is the Willie Mullins-trained Klassical Dream. He was 5th in last year’s race, but is a Festival winner – having taken the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle back in 2019. This race had eluded Mullins for a long time but he finally broke his duck in 2017 with Nichols Canyon and just like waiting for a bus – followed up again a year later in 2018 with Penhill.

Flooring Porter Would Be Looking for a Famous Stayers’ Hurdle Treble (If Getting To The Race)

The Stayers’ Hurdle king at the moment is Flooring Porter, from the Gavin Cromwell team. This gusty front-runner has won the last two runnings of this 3m Grade One hurdle and if succesful again in 2023 will join huge names in this division like Inglis Drever and Big Buck’s, who won this pot three (or more) times.

However, the current champ is facing a race against time to be fit having been out injured since running 4th at Leopardstown to Home By The Lee in the Christmas Hurdle. Let’s hope he makes it and is currently showing Cheltenham odds of @ 6/1 with BetUK.

Former Hero Paisley Park More Back For More at the Age Of 11

The final Stayers’ Hurdle runner to get a mention is the 2019 winner of the race – Paisley Park. Named after the singer Prince’s recording studio, he’s a horse that has reinvented himself several times – I guess, just like the Purple Rain performer – Formerly Known as Prince, or Symbol or No Name!

But, this Emma Lavelle runner is still enjoying his racing at the age of 11 and that showed when winning the Long Walk Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day this season – he’s sure to have plenty of each-way followers in a race we know he likes.

He was also third in the Stayers’ Hurdle 12 months ago and if able to wrestle back his title from four years ago would be the oldest horse to win this race since Crimson Embers, who was also 11.
