It’s the final of the golfing majors this week – 151st Open Championship – the oldest and many feel the most prestigious event on the calendar. But, despite being played in the UK, we’ve not had an English-born player win the Claret Jug since 1992. So, can this 31 year barren spell end this week?
Nick Faldo Was The Last Englishman To Win The Open
You must go back to 1992 to find the last Open Championship English winner – a certain Sir Nick Faldo, who fired in a -12 score at Muirfield, Scotland to win his second title in the final major of the season.
Faldo also won the Claret Jug in 1987 (Muirfield) and 1990 (St Andrews) and with no other victories in this event, this meant his 1992 success was the third and final Open win for the former world number one.
During his career Faldo also won the Masters three times (1989, 1990 and 1996), plus fired in 30 wins on the European Tour.
The 1992 Open win for Sir Nick Faldo ran from 16th-19th July with the Englishman winning £95,000. He held off the USA’s John Cook (-11) by a shot – winning with a score of -12, with Spain’s José María Olazábal another shot back in third.
However, the three Faldo Open wins all came in Scotland, so even though he’s the last Englishman to win the Claret Jug, he’s not the last to win it in his homeland – this honour still sits with Tony Jacklin (1969).
Tyrell Hatton Is The Shortest-Priced Englishman In The 2023 Open Betting
Therefore, as we head into another Open Championship – will the 31-year run without an English winner be broken?
If it is, the bookmakers feel it will might be Tyrell Hatton @ 25/1 with the best UK golf betting sites to end the drought.
The 31 year-old from Bucks is one of the shortest English players in the 2023 Open golf betting market before a ball has been hit.
Hatton is the world ranked 13th player too and will be taking part in his eleventh Open Championship – his best finish was a tied 5th at Royal Troon in 2016.
Another Englishman Tommy Fleetwood @ 25/1, who is ranked 21st in the world, is also a similar price in the 2023 Open betting and he’s gone close in the past too with a second in 2019 at Royal Portrush.
Justin Rose is next best @ 50/1 of the English runners – he’s played in a remarkable twenty Opens in the past and was runner-up in 2018 at Carnoustie. While many will remember Rose blooming in this event in 1998 when 4th as an amateur at Royal Birkdale.

How Many Englishmen Have Won The Open Championship?
Since the start of the Open Championship, England has had 22 winners, with 13 different players landing the Claret Jug. Before Faldo it was Tony Jacklin in 1996 – the last Englishman to win the Open in his homeland (Royal Lytham & St Annes).
While the winning most Englishman in this major is John Henry Taylor with 5 wins between 1894 and 1913.
Northern Ireland and Scotland Have Seen Winners Since Faldo’s Triumph In 1992
Despite the poor showing of the English players in the Open since Sir Nick Faldo winning three between 1987 and 1992, the UK overall has had winners though with Scottish and Northern Irish victors.
Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) won the Open in 2014 at Royal Liverpool – the venue of this year’s event again (watch below). Plus, his fellow countryman Darren Clarke also landed the major at Sandwich in 2011.
Paul Lawrie (Scotland) was also flying the flag for the UK when winning in 1999 at Carnoustie – he became the 22nd winning Scot in the Open.
