The oldest major in golf, The Open Championship, will feature a record prize purse for 2023 – an 18% increase from last year with an extra $2.5m up for grabs across the 156 player field.

The Open’s organisers, The R&A, have increased the prize pot for the final major of the season to $16.5 million, marking an increase of almost 20% from the 2022 edition with an extra few millions spread out across the field.

The winner of the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool next Sunday will take home $3m, a $500,000 boost from what Cameron Smith pocketed after triumph at St Andrews last year.

The R&A’s CEO, Martin Slumbers said: “Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016.

“While we are seeing substantial increases in prize money across the men’s professional game, we are fulfilling our wider obligation to the sport by elevating the AIG Women’s Open, strengthening pathways in the elite amateur game and encouraging more people around the world to play golf.

“We believe that getting this balance right is vital to the long-term future of the sport.”

Despite the increased purse, The Open is still the least generous of the four majors and ranks last in total prize money:

  1. US Open: $20m
  2. The Masters: $18.5m
  3. PGA Championship: $17.5m
  4. The Open: $16.5m
