Augusta is notoriously unforgiving – even for those at the very summit of the golfing world. Ahead of this year’s Masters, we take a look at what the highest ever recorded score is at the major after 86 renewals.

What Are The Highest Scores In Masters History?

All of the scores below were recorded by players who made the cut at the Masters and completed all four rounds of golf.

  • 314 – Luis Silverio, 1966
  • 314 – Jimmy Hitchcock, 1966
  • 313 – Fuzzy Zoeller, 2007
  • 313 – Tommy Aaron, 2000
  • 313 – Joe Carr, 1967
  • 312 – Bob Murphy, 1966
  • 312 – Bob Goalby, 1966
  • 311 – Billy Mayfair, 2007

The cut was officially introduced to the Masters in 1957 – just one year after Charles Kunkle Jr posted the highest ever score in the pre-cut era with 340 shots after 72 holes.

After the cut was introduced we started seeing the highest scores drop down a notch – but there has still been players finishing with some huge scores at Augusta in the post-cut era.

The highest score recorded at the Masters since the cut was introduced is 314, with both Luis Silverio and Jimmy Hitchcock recording 26 over par in 1966.

A score of 314 was also 26 shots back from the winner in 1966, with the legendary Jack Nicklaus winning his third green jacket at Augusta following a playoff that saw the Masters icon finish on par.

Just two players have broke past 20 over par in the 21st century with Fuzzy Zoeller and Billy Mayfair shooting 313 and 310 respectively at the 2007 Masters.

Since the cut was introduced players rarely shoot higher than 20 over par and South African Ernie Els was the last player to reach +20 in 2017.

Worst Scores On A Single Hole At The Masters

  • 13 – Sergio Garcia, Hole 15 (par-5), 2018
  • 13 – Tom Weiskopf, Hole 12 (par-3), 1980
  • 13 – Tommy Nakajima, Hole 13 (par-5), 1978

Tom Weiskopf managed to put five balls into the creek on the 12th in 1980, with four drop balls giving the Open Championship winner an eye-watering final score of 13 on the par three hole.

Tommy Nakajima and Sergio Garcia’s scores of 13 strokes on one hole are slightly more forgiven, with both recording eight strokes over the par 5 they struggled on.

Nakajima was another to have water trouble at Augusta but it was his penalty strokes that cost the Japanese golfer, who received an extra shot for dropping the ball on his shoe as well as another when his caddie fumbled a club into the water for an extra +2.

Sergio Garcia managed to hit five consecutive balls into the water on hole 15, which was only made worse by the fact the Spaniard was defending his title from 2017.
