Top trainer Gordon Elliott has sent out 33 Cheltenham Festival winners over the years and will have a big team again. But which horse has the County Meath trainer picked as his BEST chance of the meeting?

Mighty Potter is ‘Definitely One of Our Best Chances’ Says Elliott

Trainer Gordon Elliott revealed today that he feels Mighty Potter is his best chance of a 2023 Cheltenham Festival winner this year.

The 6 year-old was a fair hurdler, but has made into a better chaser – winning all three starts. He was last seen winning the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at Leopardstown by 8 1/2 lengths and will be many people’s day three Cheltenham banker.

“He’s been brilliant all season and I couldn’t ask for him to do any more than he has. The Turners is the right race for him and that’s where he’s going. I know people are questioning his run in the Supreme last year but he was immature back then and once he made a mistake it was lights out. He’s strengthened up a lot and we always knew fences would be the making of him. He’s definitely one of our best chances of the week.” Elliott told the Racing Post

Galvin, Conflated, Teahupoo and Gerri Colombe Have ‘Big Chances’ Too

Other Gordon Elliott Cheltenham runners that the trainer gave a positive mention about are Galvin, Teahupoo, Conflated and Gerri Colombe.

Galvin is a likely runner in the Cross Country race on the Wednesday and Elliott reports that he horse has schooled well over the fences. The yard has won this race four times in the last six years and also has the hot favourite Delta Work.

Teahupoo is one of the big fancies for the Stayers’ Hurdle on Thursday 16th February. He’s won 8 of his 11 career starts, including the Grade Two Galmoy Hurdle last time out. Elliott feels he’s better with cut in the ground but will also handle the spring ground well over this longer trip.

Conflated will head to the Gold Cup to try and upset the hot favourite Galopin Des Champs. He bypassed the Dublin Racing Festival to head to Cheltenham fresh and Elliott told the Racing Post. “he’s very, very good horse on can see him running a big race. I wouldn’t underestimate him”.

Gerri Colombe has been a big fancy for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and it’s easy to see why. This 7 year-old is yet to lost a race (7-from-7) and was impressive again in the Scilly Isles Chase at Sandown last time.

He looks the sort to improve for further, which he’ll get here. Elliott told the Racing Post “He jumps great and you’d have to love the way he won at Sandown. I’m not sure the ground is as important to him as people seem to think, especially over three miles. He’ll be fine on better ground over that longer trip.”
