Stradivarius Is Retired As An 8 Year-old

The popular ‘cup horse’ Stradivarius won’t been seen in action on a racecourse again, with his connections pulling stumps on his decorated career that saw him win 20 of his 35 career starts.

Over the years, the John and Thady Gosden-trained ‘Strady’ mopped-up a remarkable four Goodwood Cups, three Ascot Gold Cups, three Lonsdale Cups and two Doncaster Cups and in the process won his owner Bjorn Nielsen £3,458,968 from his 35 race-career. While he also earned a £1m bonus twice for winning the Stayers’ Million series of races in 2018 and 2019.

Nielsen told the Racing Post “In the end we decided to keep him in training for three races and he ran in all three, winning the Yorkshire Cup first time out and then having no luck at Ascot and Goodwood. But each time he showed the fire was still there.

“He was consistently prolific, going round and round, winning all those staying races again and again. Even if I am fortunate to win the Derby or the Arc at some point in the future, I know I will never have another horse like him. He was hugely appreciated by the public. It was just a joy from start to finish.”

His last race was a gallant neck second to the new kid on the block in this sphere – Kyprios – when going down on his sword in a bid to win the Goodwood Cup for a fifth time.

The last Group One win for Strady came back in 2020, while despite many thinking he might have retired a few seasons ago returned this term running so top races as an 8 year-old – including a close third and second in the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup.

His first win came at Newcastle on their all weather track on 7th Nov 2016, while his last success was in the Yorkshire Cup this season (2022).

What Next For Stradivarius?

The good news for racing fans though is that Stradivarius hasn’t been gelded and is still an entire horse. This means his connections plan to send him to stud.
