The Sheena West-trained MR FREEDOM was cruising and in with every chance when disaster struck at the second last flight in the Listed Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle at Wetherby last time – he was hampered, jinked to the left and ran out. That race has often proved to be a good guide to Cheltenham’s opener – The Triumph Hurdle Trial – and form figures since running green on his hurdles debut of 111R (3-4), suggest he could run a big race. As is often the case, the betting market prefers potential over proven form, and he could upset some representatives from bigger yards. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.

ANIGHTINLAMBOURN is very much on the upgrade, recording her three best RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) on her last three starts, winning twice over 2m4f at Worcester before a fine half-length runner-up effort in the amateur riders’ handicap chase at Cheltenham’s October meeting. She jumped the last fence four lengths in front that day but was caught close home by Jimmy The Digger, with the pair pulling 15 lengths clear of the third. That October Cheltenham race has proved a good guide to today’s contest and, with the drying ground very much in her favour, I see no reason why she can’t run well again. CHELTENHAM 2.20
STORM CONTROL is the outsider of the entire field in the Paddy Power Gold Cup but could out-run his huge odds. Kerry Lee’s nine-year-old was well beaten at Stratford last time on his reappearance/return from wind surgery but was very weak in the betting and the run was probably needed. He also lost his right fore shoe. Last season, he won on his second start back after a wind operation and, though today’s trip is on the short side for him, he could be staying on well when others have had enough. Buy to small stakes in the Spreadex 50-30-20-10 market or take an each-way price.
