Manchester United will hold a two goal advantage for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, after they won 2-0 at the City Ground thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Wout Weghorst.

  • Marcus Rashford scored early on to give United the advantage
  • Wout Weghorst scored his first United goal to double their lead
  • Christian Eriksen hit the crossbar with an effort from the edge of the box
  • Bruno Fernandes smashed a volley in to make it 3-0 late on
  • Manchester United are now priced at 9/13 to win the EFL Cup

Marcus Rashford picked up the ball on the edge of his own half early in the game and with the form the winger is in right now, it is no surprise he drove the ball towards the Nottingham Forest defence.

Rashford just kept running and running until he eventually unleashed a shot towards Wayne Hennessey’s near post with the ball almost breaking the net leaving the Welshman no chance in goal.

Rashford’s tenth goal in as many games since the World Cup was the first of three for United and it was Wout Weghorst’s first goal in Manchester that doubled their lead, as a rebounded shot from Anthony fell to the Dutch giant who made no mistake smashing home to make it 2-0.

The third and final goal of the game came from Bruno Fernandes in the 89th minute. A loose ball in the box fell to Anthony Elanga who scooped a ball to the edge of the area where Bruno Fernandes was on hand to drive a low volley into the back of the net to most likely send United to Wembley.

EFL Cup Winner predictions

Manchester United’s emphatic win at the City Ground means that they will most likely be on the way to Wembley  to face either Newcastle or Southampton, but who is most likely to win the competition?

Newcastle United won 1-0 against 10 man Southampton on the South coast this Tuesday and so they take a one goal advantage with them back to St James’ park next week.

United are now the clear favourites to lift the EFL Cup later this season at 9/13 with most bookmakers, while Newcastle are clear second favourites of Southampton and Forest who are 40/1 and 200/1 outsiders after their losses in the first leg.

A final between United and Newcastle could very much be on the cards, however with just one goal to chase Southampton still have a chance to go to Wembley.

EFL Cup Winner Odds

  • Manchester United 9/13
  • Newcastle United 39/29
  • Southampton 40/1
