Manchester United’s back line problems were exposed again at the weekend, as Championship side Coventry City clawed their way back from three goals down to force a penalty shoot-out, only for United to squeeze past them and set up an FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City.

SportsLens revealed how the club are plotting an overhaul in defence, and as such, it is understood United have stepped up interest in young Argentinian defender Aaron Anselmino in a bid to see off the threat of Chelsea and Newcastle United.

All three Premier League clubs see Anselmino as a top target for the next window after a period of detailed scouting around him at Boca Juniors.

Anselmino has been breaking into the first team in the Copa Sudamericana but was on the radar of all three clubs while making his name in youth football.

The 18-year-old centre-back is so impressive that scouts now believe it would be a surprise if he did not eventually land in the English top-flight.

It is United’s interest in Anselmino that is most intriguing right now, as they plot a re-fit of their back line.

We have revealed on SportsLens how United have a two-tiered approach to the summer and will want to sign a proven defender that would be at the top-end of the market, but will balance that out by bringing in a second defender that is still developing and could prove to be good value.

At the top end of the market names such as Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer, Antonio Silva and Jean-Clair Todibo have been shortlisted.

Anselmino would come into the frame with the second-tier of targets and fits with the club’s philosophy of signing players for the future. United’s lack of depth was on show at Wembley as Casemiro – who is expected to depart in the summer – was forced to step in at centre-back amid a spate of injuries.

A fee of around £15million is being touted at this stage for Andelmino. Chelsea and Newcastle also identify with the value that could hold in such a highly-rated teenager.

Anselmino is noted for his pace and ability to pass out of the back, while he also has good decision making when it comes to making challenges.
