Kalvin Phillips has had a tough time in Manchester since joining from Leeds United. The former Leeds United man has shared an emotional phone call he had with former manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Phillips made just 21 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions after signing for just over £40million.

Pep Guardiola said he dropped Phillips for a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool in December because he returned from World Cup duty “in no condition to play”.

On that, Phillips said:

“For me, I wasn’t overweight, but obviously the manager has seen it in a very different way,

“I just took it and did my best to get as fit as possible.”

The comments did put question marks on Phillips’ commitment to the game, something no player wants.

Phillips Shares Bielsa Story

Ahead of his new documentary, Kalvin Phillips: The Road to City, Phillips has been speaking to different media outlets.

“Man City played Leicester and I came on for like half an hour, but I was rubbish. I was rubbish! I remember going home and I was just so upset with myself, I started crying. I got on the phone and messaged [Marcelo] Bielsa and asked if I could speak to him,

“It was just good to see him and good to have a chat, and he basically told me that I’ve got the ability, it’s just down to confidence and being positive. Since that conversation I’ve just been as positive as I can.”

The words of the coach that brought the best out of Phillips, helping him get an England cap, has inspired the midfielder.

While he’s hoping this summer will see his fortune change, he may still find himself with another club. Rumours suggest Bayern Munich and Aston Villa are interested in him.
