Goodwood Favourites Today: Do They Have Form On Soft Ground?
The official going at Glorious Goodwood is (Saturday 5th August) as eased to ‘good-to-soft’ after some drier days at the West Sussex track on Thursday and Friday.
However, after the heavy rain earlier in the week the going still has a fair bit of ease in it, plus the forecast on Saturday could see more of the wet stuff fall through the day with storm ‘Antoni’ sweeping the country.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at Saturday’s seven likely favourites with the best UK horse racing betting sites and if they’ve run well in soft ground in the past.

1:50 – Coral Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Stewards’ Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV: ZAMAN JEMIL @ 3/1 with BetUK
With Ryan Moore riding this Charlton runner he’s sure to be popular in the betting. He won last time out at Thirsk in good fashion too and a 6lb rise in the weights for that doesn’t look too harsh. However, that success came on ‘good-to-firm’ ground so he’s likely to face much different conditions here.
His only other career win came on the AW at Newcastle, while he’s only raced once with some ‘soft’ in the going description – that resulted in a 3rd on ‘good-to-soft’ at Chester over 7f.
VERDICT: Is untested on soft ground with 7 of his 8 runs coming on good or quicker.

2:25 – Coral Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV: SWEET WILLIAM @ 2/1 with BetUK
Trainer John Gosden won this race last year and he’s got a great chance of adding to that here. This Sea The Stars 4 year-old has raced 5 times and won twice, including last time out at Newbury.
That win came over 2m 1/2f and on good ground and the concern would be that all five of his career runs have been on ‘good’ ground or quicker. He’s yet to race on anything labelled as soft, so the jury is out if the heaven’s open.
VERDICT: Bit to prove as yet to tackle soft ground, but breeding (Sea The Stars) gives him hope it will suit.

3:00 – Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV: FREE WIND @ 11/10 with BetUK
Frankie Dettori and John Gosden team-up here with Free Wind, who is the winner of 6 of her 9 career starts. She was, however, disappointing last time at Ascot as a beaten favourite on ‘good-to-firm’ ground so needs to bounce back.
In terms of the ground, she’s won on soft (Haydock) so win, lose or draw here connections can’t blame conditions. In fact, she’s only raced on ground with some soft in it twice (soft and good-to-soft) and won both times.
VERDICT: Has winning form on soft ground

3:35 – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV: ORAZIO @ 5/1 with BetUK
28 runners go to post but the horse that’s been heading the betting with the best UK betting sites in the build-up to the race is Orazio. The Charles Hills yard have won the Stewards’ Cup twice in the last and despite running 6th in the Wokingham last time out at Royal Ascot (good-to-firm) many feel he can improve on the softer ground.
Prior to that Ascot run he bolted up on soft ground at Ascot in May and before that won again on ‘good-to-soft’ conditions.
VERDICT: Is 2-from-2 on ground with some ‘soft’ in the description.

4:10 – East Dean Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f RTV: SOPHIA’S STARLIGHT @ 7/2 with BetUK
Open affair, so by the time this race comes about we might have another favourite, but for the purpose of this we’ll focus on the Grant Tuer runner – Sophia’s Starlight.
This 3 year-old has run 11 times (4 wins) and was last seen grabbing a silver here on Tuesday on a 6f handicap over 6f. The saddle actually slipped that day too so did remarkably well to finish where she did. That run also came on ‘good-to-soft’ and has also won on ‘good-to-soft’ at Carlisle last month.
Her only other run with more cut came on heavy ground at Doncaster in October, which resulted in finishing 6th of 8.
VERDICT: With the ground drying out a bit, the good-t0-soft ground is fine. Any more rain though and the jury would be out.

4:45 – British EBF 40th Anniversary Maiden Stakes (Colts & Geldings) Cl2 (2yo) 7f RTV: INDIVIDUALISM @ 11/4 with BetUK
A lot of lightly-raced youngsters on show here with the once-raced Individualism for the Charlie Johnston yard looking the possible favourite.
His debut run saw him finish second at Ayr last month over 7f and with that run coming on ‘good-to-soft’ should be fine here if conditions stay the same.
VERDICT: Little form to go on but at least he run okay on ‘good-to-soft’ on debut.

5:20 – Charlton Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 1m1f RTV: LIBERTY LANE @ 6/1 with BetUK
Another tight heat to end the card and the festival so we might see a new market leader come 5:20pm. Ran 4th to Dutch Decoy the last day at Newmarket and the form of that run got a boost with the winner running well at this meeting on Friday.
The run came on ‘good’ ground, but he’s won on soft (debut) at Nottingham last October to suggest today’s conditions till pose no threat.
VERDICT: Winning form on soft ground.
