Friday 23rd June 2023 Frankie Dettori Royal Ascot Rides
• 2.30pm – Albany Stakes (Group 3) 6f ITV: PORTA FORTUNA @ 5/1 with Paddy Power
A filly from the Donnacha O’Brien yard that is going the right way – winning both starts in Ireland. The last came in a Group 3 contest at Naas – lasting out by a neck over today’s 6f trip. She’s one of the slightly more experienced runners in the field with two runs, which will be a plus at this big meeting and it’s a race the O’Brien family took last time (Aidan). Looks to have a fair e/w chance.
Frankie’s sole win in the Albany Stakes came back in 2006 on the Jeremy Noseda-trained Sander Camillo.
• 3.05pm – Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) 6f ITV: LEZOO @ 15/2 with Paddy Power
A horse Frankie knows well – having ridden her in four of her 6 starts and winning on her twice. She’ll be better for a recent run at Newmarket when highly-tried in the English 1,000 Guineas and being a filly gets 3lbs from the boys in the race. She’s also a proven CD winner, when winning the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes here last September and that run would certainly give her a squeak. Little Big Bear is the one for her to aim at.
Frankie has also ridden 2 of the last 4 winners of the Commonwealth Cup in the race’s short 8-year history.
• 5:00pm – Sandringham Stakes (Handicap) 1m (straight) ITV: COPPICE @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
A race Frankie won back-to-back in 2015 and 2016, plus has won 7 times overall. The last of those wins in 2016 came on a John Gosden horse too and the pair team up again here with Coppice. This Kingman filly has won 2 of her 3 starts, with the most recent an impressive win at Newcastle on the AW in early May.
That was her first try over a mile, but she saw it out well – she’ll love the drying ground too and despite another very competitive heat has a big chance for Frankie to make it win number 8 in this Royal Ascot handicap.
• 5.35pm – King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) 1m 4f ITV: ARREST @ 3/1 with Paddy Power
We last saw Arrest running down the field in the Epsom Derby (10th of 14) so it wasn’t a fairytale ending in that English Classic for Frankie. Prior to that poor effort he won the Chester Vase well by 6 1/2 lengths and it’s possible that he just wasn’t suited to the Epsom track the last day. He does, however, take on King Of Steel here, who finished runner-up in the Derby so has a fair bit to find with that Roger Varian runner on that line of form.
If you can forgive his last run, would be a player in a race Frankie has won four times over the years.
