How Much Has The Cheltenham Gold Cup Prize Money Increased Over The Years?

See below how the Gold Cup prize money for the winning horse has increased.

Over the last four years there has not been much change – just £303.58 in the last four years, between the winners of Galopin Des Champs in 2023 and Al Boum Photo in 2019.

However, if we go back a bit more to 2013 and the win of Bobs Worth the winnings drop around £38k compared to 2023 – with the Nicky Henderson horse getting £313,225.00

Then the 2009 win for Kauto Star saw the Paul Nicholls runner bank £270,797.50, while just seven years earlier in 2002 Best Mate won around £96k less with £174,000.

If we then go back to 1995 and the Master Oats win there is another drop to £122,540, with Dessie in 1989 only securing £66,635 for his owner Richard Burridge.

Of course, the increase is all relative, as £66k in 1989 was a lot of money. But below you can still see the Gold Cup prize money jumps, with the difference between Galopin Des Champs 2023 win and Desert Orchid’s 1989 success a massive £285,356.08!
