A small field of just four Betfair Chase runners lines up at Haydock Park for the first Grade 1 of the season on Saturday, 25 November. King George hero Bravemansgame takes on last year’s winner Protektorat, track specialist Royale Pagaille and Grand National scorer Corach Rambler.

Bravemansgame Favourite Among Just 4 Betfair Chase Runners
With the joint smallest field in the race’s relatively short history, there is a focus on quality over quantity. Bravemansgame heads the market on leading UK betting sites despite a shock reappearance defeat when bidding to defend the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby earlier in the month.
Paul Nicholls has won this a record six times with legendary Betfair Chase runners of yesteryear Kauto Star and Silviniaco Conti. Challenging Ditcheat and the champion trainer is his protégé Dan Skelton with Protektorat. Successful here 12 months ago, he’s yet to replicate that career best form.
Another horse that likes Haydock, Royale Pagaille, has an entry for in-form Venetia Williams, but also plenty to find with the inmates of two major horse racing stables on past meetings. Completing the line-up is Corach Rambler, who took the world’s most famous steeplechase at Aintree in the spring. Read more about each of this fantastic four below…

- Betfair Chase Odds: 5/4
Ratings topper and course winner of the graduation chase on this card two years ago. Three-time Grade 1 winner caught out fitness wise by final fence error when trying to defend Charlie Hall crown at Wetherby races on reappearance. Widely expected to come on for the run.
Ditcheat’s fine record in this race speaks for itself, but stable jockey rides at Ascot instead. All roads lead back to Kempton races for another tilt at the King George over the Christmas and New Year period, but has leading form claims from all Betfair Chase runners and the one to beat.
2. Corach Rambler
- Age: 9
- Rating: 159
- Jockey: Derek Fox
- Trainer: Lucinda Russell
- Form: PP5/21161/3114U1/5411-5
- Notable Career Wins: 2022 & 2023 Ultima Handicap Chase, 2023 Grand National
- Betfair Chase Odds: 10/1
Dual Cheltenham Festival winner who took full advantage of being well-in to the Grand National at Aintree races, giving Scottish trainer a second success in the world’s most famous steeplechase. Not off a yard when a poor fifth at Kelso on reappearance, but obviously needs a dramatic step forward from that here.
Posted best form in the spring and has the most to find with other Betfair Chase runners on official figures. Second Ultima win threw up the Punchestown Gold Cup hero in-behind, but this is a Grade 1 off level weights. Career best required in this.
3. Protektorat
- Age: 8
- Rating: 166
- Jockey: Harry Skelton
- Trainer: Dan Skelton
- Form: 2U57/22130/11221/2134/145-
- Notable Career Wins: 2021 Manifesto Novices’ Chase, 2021 Many Clouds Chase, 2022 Betfair Chase
- Betfair Chase Odds: 7/4
Won this race on reappearance last season in style when defending champ A Plus Tard pulled up. That was a best-ever run and more then expected on the back of it. Poor fourth and soundly beaten favourite in the Cotswold Chase on Festival Trials Day before only coming fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Bravemansgame in March.
Has a good record fresh, but stable form in recent days leading up to the meeting a concern. Drifting on horse racing betting sites, but sure to give it his best. Officially has 6lb to find with Bravemansgame, so has bigger claims than other Betfair Chase runners bar the favourite.
4. Royale Pagaille
- Age: 9
- Rating: 160
- Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
- Trainer: Venetia Williams
- Form: 661326/F5U2/23/1116/21255/26F-
- Notable Career Wins: 2021 & 2022 Peter Marsh Chase
- Betfair Chase Odds: 7/1
Course form figures of 1121 and clearly likes Haydock Park. Record in Grade 1s reads 625526, so there’s a question mark over whether he’s up to elite level. This is a small field, however, and he finished runner-up in the 2021 edition. That was a distant second, much like his King George effort on reappearance last term behind Bravemansgame.
Yard in form and given plenty of time to get over Irish Grand National fall at Easter. Needs one or two Betfair Chase runners to run below their best, but the one most likely to capitalise on such an occurrence.
