McIlroy shot a score of -17 that year to win his first (and only to date) Open title, seeing off Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by 2 shots.
This remains McIlory’s only win in the Open, but after winning the recent Scottish Open the Northern Irishman is heading into the 2023 Open as the bookmakers favourite @ 7/1 with the best UK golf betting sites.
The world number one is also the only proven winner at the course in the field of 156 players this year.
Before McIlory It Was Tiger Woods That Won At Royal Liverpool in 2006
Prior to Rory McIlroy winning at Royal Liverpool in 2014, it was Tiger Woods that won that the venue in 2006.
Plus, with the former world number one golfer Woods also winning the Open at St Andrews in 2005 this means last year’s winner Cameron Smith will be trying to emulate the Woods course Open double with wins at St Andrews (2022) and Royal Liverpool (2023).
How Many Times Has The Open Championship Been Played At Royal Liverpool?
Since the first Open golf Championship in 1860 the tournament has been staged at Royal Liverpool 12 times.
