1. ALLAHO
Age: 9
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Paul Townend
Official Rating: 176
Odds: 15/8
Well-backed in the build-up to the race and returned from a long time off to win at Clonmel last month. Class act that has won the Ryanair Chase twice at the Cheltenham Festival and the winner of 8 of his 13 starts over fences. From the Willie Mullins yard that have two King George wins to their name and ridden by top jockey Paul Townend, who is hunting his first success in this race. Top-rated in the field and expected to the the 2023 King George favourite.
2. BRAVEMANSGAME
Age: 8
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Jockey: Harry Cobden
Official Rating: 171
Odds: 9/4
Last year’s King George winner and is back for more with a big chance. However, hasn’t won a race since taking this Boxing Day prize 12 months ago but was runner-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Has returned this year with two odds-on defeats so on a bit of a recovery mission. On a plus, is trained by the 13-time winner of the King George, Paul Nicholls, and also returns to his beloved Kempton, where he’s 2-from-2 and yet to lose a race. Past winners also have a top record in the King George – since 1980 there have been 17 winners that had already won the race.
3. FRODON
Age: 11
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Paul Nicholls
Jockey: Bryony Frost
Official Rating: 156
Odds: 33/1
2020 King George winner that is back for more at the age of 11. Will be the oldest runner in the field and if able to wrestle back his crown would join Desert Orchid, Kauto Star and Edredon Bleu as past 11 year-old winner. However, the oldest KG winner remains the first ever hero – Southern Hero (12). Another trained by the powerful Paul Nicholls yard (13 wins in the race) and will be ridden as normal by top female rider Bryony Frost. Loves Kempton (3-from-7) and is the horse that’s banked the most prize money in the field (ÂŁ1.16m). Was also 4th in 2021 and 3rd in 2022. Lowest-rated in the field, but not without a squeak of hitting the frame at a big price is the race falls apart.
4. GERRI COLOMBE (NON-RUNNER)
Age: 7
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Gordon Elliott
Jockey: Jack Kennedy
Odds: –
Not certain to run as connections were hoping for more rain. High class chaser in the making though and at just 7 years-old looks set to dominate this sphere for many a year. Last seen coming with a late rattle to win the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal last month and was second in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase to The Real Whacker back in March. But it’s looking likely he’ll stay in Ireland over the Xmas period now, while trainer Gordon Elliott is yet to win the King George – coming closest in 2015 when his Don Cossack took a late tumble.
5. HEWICK
Age: 8
Weight:Â 11st 10lbs
Trainer: John Joseph Hanlon
Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
Official Rating: 167
Odds: 11/1
2022 American Grand National winner, but don’t let that fool you as it’s run over hurdles and over 2m5f – only in America! That said is still a class act and has raided the UK before when winning twice at Sandown, including when taking the 2022 bet365 Gold Cup. Bargain buy at just €850 and has banked over ÂŁ450k now. Would be looking to become only the second Irish-trained winner since 2006, but in-form jockey Gavin Sheehan booked.
6. ROYALE PAGAILLE (NON RUNNER)
Age: 9
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Venetia Williams
Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
Official Rating: 166
Odds: 10/1
Runner-up in the King George 12 months ago and on that effort certainly not without a chance. Owned by the popular Rich Ricci and reversed the KG form with Bravemansgame when lowering his colours in the Betfair Chase at Haydock last month. Has won at Kempton in the past too, but you feel any rain would certainly enhance his claims. Trainer Venetia Williams won the race back in 1998 with Teeton Mill.
7. SHISHKIN
Age: 9
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Jockey: Nico de Boinville
Official Rating: 173
Odds: 7/2
Talented but sometimes quirky horse. Last seen refusing to race at Ascot back in November and connections have tried by failed to get a run into him since. Therefore, he will come to the King George with that issue still hanging over him and without a run since last April. These are concerns, but it’s still hard to ignore he’s won 9 of his 13 career starts and also loves Kempton. He’s 4-from-4 at the track and no other horses in the race can match those track figures. Trainer Nicky Henderson has won the King George three times before. Is also the second-highest-rated in the field.
8. THE REAL WHACKER
Age: 7
Weight: 11st 10lbs
Trainer: Patrick Neville
Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies
Official Rating: 162
Odds: 9/1
If Gerri Colombe doesn’t run, then The Real Whacker will be the youngest horse (7) of the King George runners 2023. This Patrick Neville runner is a staying chaser on the up that took the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season – beating Gerri Colombe by a shorthead. Since seen pulled up in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham with a big weight (12st) but that run came off a 248-day break and should be better for it. First run at Kempton but no reason why it won’t suit and is a horse that acts on any ground.
