Tommy Fleetwood is yet to get over the line and win on the PGA Tour but looks in pole position at The Open Championship following a stunning opening round of 66.

The Englishman’s 66 is the lowest opening round of his major championship career, gaining 2.64 strokes in approach, 1.20 around the green and 2.85 putting – hitting 6/14 fairways and 14/18 greens with six birdies and one bogey.

Despite not claiming a victory on the PGA Tour to date, Fleetwood is widely regarded as one of the best golfers on the planet and has been a big player in the majors for many years now.

The 32-year-old from Southport, Merseyside, will feel at home this week at Royal Liverpool and has posted very strong performances in previous Opens – outright second in 2019 at Royal Portrush and tied-fourth last year at St Andrews.

Fleetwood shares the clubhouse lead with South African amateur Christo Lamprecht, who produced a fine display with seven birdies and two bogeys. He qualified for the final major of the year by winning the Amateur Championship last month.

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished with a one-under-par 70 despite a chaotic round on the greens, which is proving to be a pressing issue for the American who is undoubtedly the best player in the game from tee-to-green.

Jordan Spieth carded a two-under 69 despite a disappointing bogey on 18 and looks to be in great shape ahead of Friday’s second round, aiming to win his first major championship since triumph in this tournament six years ago at Royal Birkdale.
