Cheltenham Gold Cup Runners 2023: There Will Be 13 Gold Cup Horses This Year
The latest 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup declaration stage was on Saturday 11th March 2023, and we saw 13 possible Gold Cup runners stand their ground (see below). Amongst the entries were the current Gold Cup champion A Plus Tard, with the final horse to come out of the race – The Real Whacker – who will be running at the Festival on Wednesday.
It’s the Willie Mullins-trained Galopin Des Champs that is still the Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite – he’s priced @ 7/4 with Paddy Power ahead of the March 17th showcase race.
Galopin Des Champs Tops The 2023 Gold Cup Betting
Galopin Des Champs fell at the final fence in the Turners Novices’ Chase at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival when 12 lengths clear, but has since bounced back to win the Boylesports Gold Cup (17th April) at Fairyhouse and returned this season win an easy success in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown (19th Dec).
Barring that tumble at the Festival, this Willie Mullins-trained 7 year-old has won all his starts over fences (4-from-5) and since coming over from France has been sent off favourite in 8 of his 10 races. You can see all the main Willie Mullins 2023 Cheltenham Festival runners here
Many will also remember Galopin Des Champs winning the 2021 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival so does have winning form at this meeting but will be trying to add the biggest race at the 4-day festival to his CV this March and give Mullins his third Gold Cup winner since 2019.

Current Champ A Plus Tard an Intended Gold Cup Runner As Well
The last Cheltenham Gold Cup back-to-back winner was only in 2019 and 2020 when the Willie Mullins-trained Al Boum Photo successfully defended in title. While prior to that you have to go back to the trio of wins for Best Mate between 2002 and 2004 to find the last Gold Cup winner on the bounce.
This year, in 2023, it will be A Plus Tard @ 7/1Â with Paddy Power as the latest Cheltenham Gold Cup horse to try follow-up after winning jump racing Blue Riband 12 months ago. This Henry De Bromhead 9 year-old got the better of the 2021 Gold Cup winner, Minella Indo, by 15 lengths that day but will need to bounce back from a poor return run this season that saw him well beaten in the Haydock Betfair Chase (Nov 19th 2022).
2021 Gold Cup Winner Could Be Back For More
The 10 year-old Minella Indo @ 20/1 with Paddy Power is another of the 27 Cheltenham Gold Cup runners at this stage as the 2021 hero of this race holds his ground. Minella Indo will be hoping to become the first horse to wrestle back his Gold Cup crown since the mighty Kauto Star in 2009 and has shown this season he’s as good as ever with a gutsy win in the Savills New Year’s Day Chase at Tramore recently.
Minella Indo loves Cheltenham too – not only did he win the Gold Cup in 2021, but also won the 2019 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. Oh, he’s also been second in an RSA Chase and was runner-up in the Gold Cup tweleve months ago. Meaning his overall Festival form reads an impressive 1-2-1-2.
King George Winner Bravemansgame Also Entered for 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup
The last King George VI Chase winner to follow-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup was Long Run during the 2010/11 season. This improving Paul Nicholls-trained 8 year-old Bravemansgame @ 6/1 was an easy 14 length winner of the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day at Kempton Park, with his task made easier by the fall late on by L’Homme Presse – the last-named will miss Cheltenham with an injury.

Other Notable Gold Cup 2023 Runners Include Shishkin, Conflated, Noble Yeats and Hewick
Other possible 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup runners at this stage are the 2022 Savills Chase winner Conflated @ 12/1 with Paddy Power. This classy Gordon Elliott Cheltenham runner bypassed the Dublin Racing Festival in early February so will head to the race fresher than most.
Grand National Winner Noble Yeats Entered Too
Noble Yeats @ 8/1 with Paddy Power is another potential Gold Cup 2023 runner as last season’s Grand National hero will be looking for a famous double – the only other horses to win both these huge UK steeplechases were L’Escargot and Golden Miller.
Another horse that could attract interest in the build-up to the Gold Cup 2023 is the improving John Joseph Hanlon runner Hewick @ 20/1 with Paddy Power. This 8 year-old won the 2022 bet365 Gold Cup, the Galway Plate last summer and also went over to America to win the US Grand National.
