Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023 Betting: Back 2022 King George VI Winner Bravemansgame at 10/1 with BetUK
After supplying trainer Paul Nicholls with his 13th King George VI Chase winner on Boxing Day at Kempton Park, Bravemansgame has been cut from around 25/1 to a best priced @ 10/1 with BetUK to follow-up in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday 17th March.
Nicholls has also stated (see below) that Bravemansgame, who won the King George by 14 lengths, will not run again before Cheltenham, so unless something happens to the current 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Galopin Des Champs, then his odds are unlikely to change much.
The King George VI Chase victory was Bravemansgame’s sixth career win over fences from seven starts and his overall career wins stand at 9 (from 15 starts)
Bravemansgame has also been priced up @ 8/1 with BetUK for the 2023 Ryanair Chase (16th March), which is run over a shorter trip (2m5f) which some shrewd judges are saying will be more to the horses liking at Cheltenham.

Paul Nicholls told the Racing Post “Not bad for a horse who doesn’t stay! “We were very confident and knew we had him at his best today. I loved the way he stayed on. All down the back he didn’t have a great passage because L’Homme Presse kept jumping across him, but he came back hard on the bridle and stayed on really strongly.
“He’s a maturing horse and we trained him for today, and that’s what you’ve got to do to win the championship races. He’ll go straight to Cheltenham now and I won’t run him again before the Gold Cup.
“On better ground I think he travels a little better than today, but he dug deep and stayed on. He’ll travel away in a Gold Cup and he’s very smart when he’s right.
“You’ve got to go and give it a go. Horses who win this race do run well at Cheltenham. He’s probably mature enough to get the trip at Cheltenham on decent ground. There’s no point going anywhere else and we’ll give it our best shot.”

The Last Horse To Win The King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup In The Same Season Was………?
Step forward LONG RUN (pictured). This classy Nicky Henderson-trained chaser was the last horse to win both the King George VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season (2010/11)
Therefore, if running in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Bravemansgame will be looking to end an 11 year spell that’s seen the King George winner follow-up in the Gold Cup. Prior to Long Run, the mighty Kauto Star also did the double in the 2006/07 and 2008/09 season.
L’Homme Presse Shorter In The Betting Than Bravemansgame For Gold Cup Glory
The Venetia Williams yard are yet to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but despite looking beaten when unseating at the final fence in the 2022 King George Chase, their L’Homme Presse @ 7/1 with BetUK is still a shorter price than Bravemansgame for the big Cheltenham showcase race.
Many feel that the Cheltenham track will suit L’Homme Presse better than Bravemansgame, as well as the longer trip the Gold Cup provides. However, despite the King George VI Chase clues for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it’s still the Willie Mullins-trained Galopin Des Champs @ 7/4 with BetUK that heads the betting for the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup. The Mullins yard have won two of the last four Gold Cups and in Galopin Des Champs they look to have a huge chance of adding to that record.
Galopin Des Champs returned to the fray this season with a facile win at Punchestown in the John Durkan Chase on December 19th (watch below) and having won 4 of his 5 chase starts to date is all the rage for the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup on 17th March.
What About The Current Gold Cup Champ, A Plus Tard?
Al Boum Photo was the last horse to win back-to-back Cheltenham Gold Cups in 2019 and 2020, so the 2022 winner A Plus Tard @ 8/1 with BetUK will be hoping to repeat the feat in 2023 – watch his 2022 Gold Cup win again below. This Henry De Bromhead runner was also runner-up in 2021, so has solid Cheltenham Gold Cup credentials, but does need to bounce back from flopping on his return run in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on Nov 19th.
