Epsom Downs Racecourse is Surrey is home to one of the most important horse racing events in the annual calendar in the British Isles, so it’s a track you can’t ignore when betting. We have everything you need for the races at Epsom today.
Epsom Downs Racecourse Events & Fixtures
Much like Newmarket races that also hosts Classics, Epsom Downs Racecourse dates back to the Seventeenth Century. Some records trace horse racing on the Downs back to the reign of King Charles I. More than a century after the Restoration of the Monarchy, in 1779, the Earl of Derby created The Oaks, a race for three-year-old fillies named after his nearby estate.
This followed the inauguration of the St Leger at Doncaster races three years earlier. The Derby, the most famous of Epsom Downs races today, meanwhile, was held for the first time in 1780. These became known as the Classics, age restricted events open to three-year-old colts and/or fillies only. Alongside the Leger, the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas complete the suite of five such races held every year.
By 1784, The Oaks and Epsom Derby were increased in distance to their current length of a mile-and-a-half. The course of Epsom races today was laid out at this point with racehorses taking the wide, sweeping bend of Tattenham Corner ever since. Racegoers can watch events unfold from Epsom Downs itself for free with that proving a great vantage point with the track located between Epsom, Langley Vale and Tadworth.
Configuration of Epsom Downs Races Today
Unlike other venues, Epsom Racecourse isn’t a complete circuit but more of a U-shape. No races longer than The Derby and Oaks distance of a mile-and-a-half take place on this unique track. Horses race left-handed and encounter some steep undulations on their way round. The first half of the Classics is all uphill with the last part of the climb starting the long turn for home at Tattenham Corner.
There are separate chutes for races over six and seven furlongs, plus a five-furlong straight course that has the reputation of being the fasted track in the world. This is because until the last furlong, the home straight is all downhill. There is a run-in of just less than half-a-mile from the point where the Derby course enters the home straight after completing that serious turn.
The final 200 yards or so before the winning post is another climb. Much is made of the camber in Epsom races today as not all horses deal with the track. Although sharp, the up-down-up nature of the course simply doesn’t suit every thoroughbred. Some act better on fairer tracks like York races or ones designed for galloping types. Epsom Downs Racecourse is a test like no other in the sport.
