Market Rasen Racecourse Events & Fixtures
Not a lot of people know that horse racing in the Market Rasen area dates back around 100 years before the racecourse opened at its current location on land between Willingham Road and Legsby Road in 1924. Many other sites around the Lincolnshire market town were in use for the sport from 1828. This was due to overlapping spheres of influence from three of the county’s hunts: the Brocklesby, Burton and Southwold.
Key meetings of Market Rasen races today have little resemblance to those in Victorian times. The opening day of the town’s Feast Week, the Monday after the Annual Livestock Fair in September, was dedicated to horse racing from at least 1828. A springtime meeting was also added in 1871, which continues in some form to this day.
After the closure of Lincoln Racecourse on the Carholme in 1964, Market Rasen became the only mainstream horse racing venue in the county of Lincolnshire. By 1995, the track had a Summer Festival raceday when the Summer Plate Handicap Chase, now the track’s only graded event, and Summer Handicap Hurdle were first run.
Market Rasen Racecourse has also played its part in shaping the early careers of two modern Grand National greats in Red Rum and Tiger Roll. Back in 1968, Red Rum contested a novice hurdle at the track. Tiger Roll, meanwhile, made his racecourse debut here, winning a juvenile hurdle for Nigel Hawke in 2013 before being sold to Gigginstown House Stud and moving to Ireland.
Configuration of Market Rasen Races Today
All races at Market Rasen today go right-handed around an oval course with a full lap of the track about a mile-and-a-quarter. Nearly as sharp as Kempton Park but with more undulations, the ground can get very boggy by the trees after exiting the back straight and going into the home turn during winter. It’s uphill on that bend, meaning there is a greater test of stamina than first appears.
There are just five flights of hurdles on a complete circuit of Market Rasen races today with three down the back straight. That means just two to jump after turning for home. The final flight is around a quarter of a mile from the winning post, so there’s a long run-in for hurdle races here.
In steeplechases, meanwhile, there are seven fences on a full lap of the track. Four of these are down the back with the second and last in that line being open ditches. After coming into the home straight, horses must jump three plain fences. Again, by National Hunt standards, the run-in from the final obstacle to the line is lengthy.
