With the King George horse race a big part of many people’s Christmas traditions a lot of ‘once-a-year’ punters will be keen to look back at last year’s race. So, who was the King George winner last year in 2022?
Bravemansgame Was The King George Winner Last Year
The Paul Nicholls-trained Bravemansgame landed the King George VI Chase last year in 2022 – winning by 14-lengths at the line.
This King George winner was also providing trainer Paul Nicholls with his 13th success in the big Boxing Day Kempton race and his fourth in the last five years.
Bravemansgame had the Venetia Williams-trained Royale Pagaille back in second that day, but the small worry for last year’s King George winner is that he’s failed to win another race since.
He’s run four times and been second of third each time. One of these silvers came in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, while he was last seen being beaten by Royale Pagaille in the Betfair Chase at Haydock (watch below).

Is Bravemansgame Running In The King George Again This Year (2023)?
Yes, last year’s winner – Bravemansgame – will be back for more to try and defend his title. He’s expected to be the second favourite in the betting with the best UK horse racing sites, with the Willie Mullins-trained Allaho the likely market leader.
Past Winners Have A Good Record Of Winning Again
If you are thinking of betting on Bravemansgame to win the King George VI Chase again, there is good news.
In recent years, this Kempton race has had a habit of throwing up winners that had already won the race.
Since 1979, we’ve seen 17 horses win that were already past winners of the King George.
The most recent being Clan Des Obeaux, who won both races in 2018 and 2019.
As well as Bravemansgame, we could also see another past King George winner in Frodon. He won the race in 2020 and is another trained by the powerful Paul Nicholls yard.
Bravemansgame is also aged 8 and Andy Newton’s key King George Chase trends tell us 81% of the last 21 winners were aged 8 or younger.
